Ants in the legs, “and neurons overheating,” laughs an old traveling companion of Emmanuel Macron.
Impatient, according to several close friends, to get involved himself in the European campaign, the President of the Republic does not only intend to invite himself to a big meeting alongside the head of the list Valérie Hayer between now and June 9.
Behind the scenes, for several weeks, he has not ruled out another initiative: a new major speech on Europe.
Like the one delivered in September 2017 at the Sorbonne, and still considered to this day as the reference in terms of Macronian thought on the subject.
In this plea, he defended his federalist vision of the continent, and claimed the idea of European sovereignty, particularly in industrial and strategic matters.
“At the time, everyone said it looked great on paper, but it would never be implemented.
However, the way in which Europe organized itself during the Covid crisis to order vaccines, then the way in which it is moving forward today on the war in Ukraine, shows that a long way has still been covered,” notes one close, citing the agreement on the joint tank of the future project signed this Friday between Paris and Berlin.
