Anyone who frequently travels on the A96 is well aware of the large construction site around Memmingen.

As part of the construction work, the high bridge on the A96, which leads over the Neue Welt, was also renewed or reinforced.

The south bridge will reopen to traffic on Friday, March 29, 2024.

Memmingen – The “Subsequent Noise Prevention Memmingen-Amendingen” measure has been completed – to the delight of Amendingen residents and city park visitors.

The construction work in the “Memmingen High Bridge” project is coming to an end and in the evening hours of March 28th the southern part of the structure will be opened to traffic again.

Costs and time in harmony

The construction project, which was designed to take 3.5 years to complete, meets the clients' expectations.

Planning work for the high bridge began in 2017, according to project manager Martin Imhof from Autobahn GmbH.

Obtaining the permits and required documents was time-consuming.

The first construction work could only be carried out in March 2020.

In spring 2021, the northern part of the structure, which was built in 1982 as part of the B 18, was demolished and rebuilt.

According to calculations, the southern part of the structure was able to bear the additional load of the noise barriers.

The road slab was widened from ten to twelve meters.

Work was also carried out under the bridge, for example the underpass of the “Am Vogelbrunnen” street was widened and a new sedimentation and rain retention basin was built.

Some work under the bridge is still in progress.

The project includes four construction phases and was estimated to cost around 32 million euros.

With expenses amounting to 32.7 million euros, this is within reason.

Happy day for Memmingen

Stephan Stracke and Klaus Holetschek thanked those involved and highlighted the federal government's investments in the area of infrastructure.

Holetschek emphasized that this noise protection is particularly important from a health perspective.

The second mayor Margareta Böckh, who herself lives in Amendingen and is affected, was particularly pleased and praised the new road surface and the walls, which “provide the people of Amendingen with high-end noise protection.”
