In Ebersberg there is a struggle to create a permanent zebra crossing.
But there could be an exchange: a new crossing, but fewer parking spaces.
This leaves business residents doubtful.
Ebersberg
– A permanent zebra crossing on Heinrich-Vogl-Straße in Ebersberg is the declared political wish of Mayor Ulrich Proske.
This seems to have been achievable since February at the latest, when a temporary yellow zebra crossing was set up at the site for around two weeks due to demolition work and the associated partial road closure.
Mayor: “I think many Ebersbergers would like that”
“If it works for the construction site, why not all year round?” said the mayor to the EZ at the time.
Today he sticks to his assessment: “I think that many Ebersbergers would approve of that.” There is headwind from a businessman who would be affected.
A site inspection with the police and district office took place last week to explore feasibility.
“You have to be able to justify it very well,” said the town hall boss about the busy section.
Legal supervision lies with the district office.
When asked, spokeswoman Laura Tendel points out that the city has to implement the zebra crossing properly and then they won't interfere.
The district office only acts in an advisory capacity as long as there are no complaints.
Although there is regional traffic on the route, it is still a purely local road.
Prerequisite: Parking spaces would have to be given way to ensure clear lines of sight, say the police
“50:50” is his gut feeling as to whether the zebra crossing will work, says Proske.
A pedestrian traffic light is also not entirely out of the question.
Stephan Mittermaier, traffic specialist at the Ebersberg police station, reveals himself to be a cautious ally of the project: “The police fundamentally support all measures that improve traffic safety and are within the legal framework,” he explains when asked.
And there lies the problem: In order for the second requirement to be met, an exchange is required.
In order to create a clear line of sight between drivers and pedestrians, “a few parking spaces would have to be removed” on Heinrich-Vogl-Straße, said the police chief inspector.
Bäcker Freundl: Parking spaces in front of the store are urgently needed
(By the way: Everything from the region is now also available in our regular Ebersberg newsletter.)

Mayor Proske emphasizes that this needs to be discussed with the nearby businesses before a decision is made.
The local bakery would be affected.
Its boss, Martin Freundl, draws a red line towards the EZ: “Doing without parking spaces in front of a store is unthinkable,” he says.
The mayor did not mention this problem to him in an initial conversation.
With regard to a crossing option at the level of his shop, the bakery owner says: “Full support, but not at this price.” He is noticeably dependent on walk-in customers who want to stop directly in front of the shop, so each of the five or six parking spaces is there Heinrich-Vogl-Straße makes a difference.
There is therefore a deal with the city regarding the sidewalk in front of the shop on the Freundl family's property: the parking spaces are free for this.
If these are at issue, he will defend himself.
It is a difficult corner, because the next problem area lurks just a few meters away: there are no plans to defuse the immediately adjacent intersection at the entrance to the shopping center parking lot, which is prone to sheet metal damage.
The mayor makes it clear that the city has no leeway here.
