Highlights: UN resolution for a ceasefire: according to Israel, American abstention “harms” its war efforts. Israel also denounced the abstention of its American ally. For its part, the Palestinian Islamist movement welcomed the Security Council resolution. The group expressed its “desire to initiate an exchange process” prisoners/hostages “immediately” and “to achieve a permanent ceasefire leading to the withdrawal of all Israeli forces” from the territory. “This must be the signal for the end of this onslaught of atrocities against our people,” said Riyad Mansour.

The UN Security Council adopted a resolution to demand “an immediate ceasefire for the month of Ramadan” in the G Strip

Will the Israeli government comply with the UN resolution?

The United Nations Security Council voted in favor of an “immediate ceasefire”.

The resolution "demands an immediate ceasefire for the month of Ramadan", which already began two weeks ago, should "lead to a lasting ceasefire" in the Gaza Strip and "demands the release immediate and unconditional treatment of all hostages.

In the process, the Israeli Minister of Defense reacted from Washington: “We do not have the moral right to stop the war as long as there are hostages in Gaza,” launched Yoav Gallant before a meeting with the White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

Israel also denounced the abstention of its American ally.

This allowed the adoption, for the first time, of a United Nations resolution demanding an immediate “ceasefire” in the Gaza Strip threatened by famine, after more than five months of war between the IDF and Hamas.

Immediately after the announcement of the results of the vote, the Jewish state canceled the visit of a delegation that was expected in Washington.

“This is a clear step back from the consistent position of the United States in the Security Council since the start of the war” on October 7, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office wrote in a statement.

This withdrawal harms both the war efforts and the efforts to free the hostages, because it gives Hamas hope that international pressure will allow them to achieve a ceasefire without releasing our hostages.

Not applying it would be “unforgivable”

John Kirby, White House spokesman, responded that on the contrary, this abstention did not represent “a change of direction”.

He added that Washington, which had blocked several draft resolutions of this type, had not yet voted in favor of the text because it lacked “essential” elements such as a condemnation of Hamas.

“This resolution recognizes that during the month of Ramadan, we must commit to peace,” said the American ambassador to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield.

Hamas can do this by accepting the deal on the table.

A ceasefire can begin immediately after the release of a first hostage.

This is the only way to ensure a ceasefire and the release of the hostages.

This call “must be a turning point” to put an end to the “agony” of the inhabitants of the Palestinian enclave, pleaded the Palestinian ambassador to the UN.

“This should help save lives on the ground.

This must be the signal for the end of this onslaught of atrocities against our people,” said Riyad Mansour.

“This resolution must be implemented.

A failure will be unforgivable,” warned UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres in a message posted on X.
