Summary.

It is an imposing ensemble with white facades, located on the banks of the Gave de Pau, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques.

Notre-Dame de Bétharram, its former name, is today a private and Catholic school group which welcomes students from kindergarten to high school.

But for nearly two centuries, the religious institution was intended to teach young boys in middle and high school.

An establishment renowned for its excellent results, but also known for a long time for the iron discipline that reigned there.

Last February, 33 former students filed a complaint for acts of physical and sexual violence.

Decades after their time in Betharram, some say they are still marked by the gratuitous and disproportionate violence they suffered at the hands of adults.

In addition to arbitrary punishments, several testimonies report sexual abuse and rape committed by guards.

In the late 1990s, a clergyman who had headed the institution was himself indicted for rape.
