From April 5th, the route at the Farchant tunnel will change.
The western tube will be closed until mid-July.
A renovation is on the agenda to eliminate structural and operational deficits.
Farchant - The eastern tube of the Farchanter Tunnel has already been structurally and operationally repaired as part of the B2 in 2023.
The work was necessary after almost 25 years of operation “to address wear-related defects in the tunnel,” says the Weilheim State Building Authority.
Equivalently, it will soon be the turn of the western tube.
Therefore, this will be closed to traffic from Friday, April 5th, until probably Friday, July 19th (in the direction of Garmisch) and the eastern tube (in the direction of Munich) will be in single-lane two-way traffic.
The preparatory work to set up traffic routing will take place during the night of April 4th to 5th.
Outdated equipment
The reason for the renovation is structural and operational deficits.
According to the building authority, these include poor grip of the concrete road surface, the peeling of the protective wall coating, and outdated equipment - for example the lighting, which no longer corresponds to the state of the art.
These deficiencies represent restrictions in traffic safety for further operations, it is said.
In addition, the durability of the structural substance of the facility is at risk.
The experiences from 2023 show that the situation does not deteriorate significantly as a result of the single-lane traffic routing in the tunnel, as the access and exit areas of Federal Highway 2 continue to contain single-lane sections of the route and block handling at the tunnel is activated anyway when there is heavy travel traffic.
