The attacks in Moscow put Germany's security authorities on alert.

Nancy Faeser is planning increased security measures for the European Football Championship in the summer.

Berlin - Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) has announced temporary controls at the German borders for this year's European Football Championship in Germany in the summer.

In addition to Islamists, the focus is also on violent hooligans from other European countries.

“We will carry out temporary border controls at all German borders during the tournament in order to be able to prevent possible violent criminals from entering the country,” Faeser told the

Rheinische Post

.

This is necessary in order to “protect the major international event as best as possible.”

For the Federal Minister of the Interior, the security of the European Football Championship is “top priority”.

With her announcement, Faeser also responded to the attacks in the Crocus City Hall concert hall in Moscow on Friday evening, as a result of which 139 deaths have now been identified.

Such an attack would of course result in “the authorities taking a close look at it” and it being incorporated into the EM security planning.

Faeser before the European Championships in his own country: “Security forces will be concentrated even more closely”

Faeser had already announced an expansion of border controls in February, as is usual for events of this magnitude.

In view of the migration situation, there are currently stationary border controls with the neighboring countries Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria and Switzerland.

Faeser emphasized that the employees of the security authorities would be “brought together even more strongly” for the tournament.

Overall, the preparations for the European Championships in the summer went well and professionally, “also thanks to the excellent cooperation with the countries.”

Increased alert – Saxony’s Interior Minister Schuster emphasizes that they have “been prepared for a long time”

The upcoming European Football Championship will be held in stadiums in a total of ten German cities.

In addition to Berlin, Hamburg and Munich, these include Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Gelsenkirchen, Cologne, Leipzig and Stuttgart.

Saxony's Interior Minister Armin Schuster (CDU) also commented on the preparation of the police in view of a possible terrorist threat at the European Championship tournament in the summer.

“I don’t want

to spread a mood of alarm,” said the CDU politician on Tuesday in the

ARD

morning magazine

“I would rather say that we have been prepared for such scenarios for a long time, including when it comes to equipment.” Schuster added that they have been preparing for the tournament for months.

However, it would not have taken an attack in Moscow to “be even more alarmed” about a possible terrorist threat.

After the attack on the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo

in Paris in 2015 , the German and Saxon police

changed a lot of their tactics and equipment in order to prepare for such operations.

“And of course that also works now,” emphasized Schuster.

Schuster comments on the role of the police at the 2024 European Football Championships

Schuster emphasized that a lot of early reconnaissance is currently being carried out.

“We are taking action very quickly.

You can see this in the attacks in the summer in North Rhine-Westphalia or in December - attempted attacks on Cologne Cathedral - or last week in Thuringia.

So, we're not waiting." On March 20, two terror suspects were arrested in Gera, Thuringia, who are suspected of having planned an attack in Sweden.

Operational concepts are already available, and we are currently preparing for the tournament with a lot of training.

“And then in the summer, when it starts, it is of course about massive presence, especially where there are a lot of people, i.e. public viewing,” added Schuster.

The Saxon Interior Minister also reiterated Union demands for more powers for the security authorities.

“Now, when it comes to terrorist attacks, you can see how often we rely on information from abroad.

We urgently need to correct that,” he explained.

The state minister appealed to the federal government's traffic light coalition to do something about online searches and data retention.

“I don't want to have to rely so heavily on foreign clues, which, by the way, are obtained using these methods.

That would make us even better.

But overall I think the networking is good, even within Germany.”
