Italy has obtained support from the European Commission for the implementation of 15 projects focusing mainly on energy and food security through the Technical Support Instrument to help EU Member States design and implement resilience-enhancing reforms at national level, itemized on Tuesday.

The support concerns, among other things, the implementation of the Italian government's Mattei Plan to create a new partnership with African countries to address the root causes of irregular migration and turn Italy into a sort of hub for energy supplies from Africa to Europe as the continent tries to reduce its dependency on Russian oil and gas supplies after Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.

Specifically, Italy is to receive assistance in drawing up the roadmap for 'Connecting Africa to Europe for clean energy production' - mainly renewables and hydrogen - and for 'Accelerating the process of renewable energy permits in Italy', as part of the government's commitment to launch the Consolidated Renewable Energy Act in the coming months.

Two further projects concern the reduction of seismic and climate risks for public buildings and one concerns 'Food safety at national and regional level'.

Of the 15 projects approved for Italy, seven have a cross-border dimension.
