Despite controversial discussions about gun rights, private gun ownership is increasing in Bavaria.
However, the FDP rejects tightening gun laws.
Munich – There are currently around 1.13 million weapons in private ownership in Bavaria, according to data from the national weapons register published by the Federal Office of Administration.
As of December 31, 2023, these weapons were distributed among 204,996 people registered in Bavaria.
Compared to other federal states, Bavaria is the front runner, as more than one in five weapons in Germany is registered in the Free State.
Even in North Rhine-Westphalia, the most populous federal state, the numbers are significantly lower with 158,603 registered gun owners and 853,722 weapons.

The statistics also contain almost 580,000 so-called weapons law permits that are assigned to people residing in Bavaria.
This is about 10,000 more than at the end of 2022, when there were 569,528.
These permits include firearms licenses and shooting permits.
The number of small gun licenses has also increased: at the end of 2022 there were 122,342 and at the end of 2023 there were 129,078.
It is legally possible for one person to have multiple permits.
The number of privately owned weapons in Bavaria is increasing, as is the number of weapons permits.

After cleaning the weapons register database, the figures for 2023 cannot currently be compared with the values given for 2022.
However, at the end of 2022, only about 1,000 more guns were registered and the number of gun owners stood at 206,541.

The regulations of gun law are both politically and socially controversial and are repeatedly discussed controversially, especially after school shootings.
Last year, Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) announced that psychological suitability would be examined in future applications for a gun ownership card.
