Turning point or wishful thinking?
This Monday, March 25, the UN Security Council adopted a resolution demanding an “immediate ceasefire in Gaza during the month of Ramadan”, which should lead to a “lasting ceasefire” and the “ immediate and unconditional release of all hostages held by Hamas.
The text was adopted by the non-permanent members of the Security Council with 14 votes in favor and one abstention from the United States.
A first, since before that, the Biden administration had vetoed three draft resolutions for a ceasefire in Gaza.
“This is a development that was expected by the entire international community, but also by part of the democratic electorate,” notes Johann Soufi, specialist in international law and former lawyer for the United Nations.
