It is a mixed result presented by the Interior Minister.

The number of seriously injured people in traffic is at an all-time low.

But the streets haven't really become any safer.

Stuttgart - The week is still young, but accidents happen all the time.

Some end badly, others rather mildly.

On Monday alone, an 18-year-old driver drove into a tree near Erbach (Alb-Donau district) in the morning and died.

Five trucks collided on Monday in black ice on Autobahn 81 near Geisingen (Tuttlingen district).

It crashes 845 times a day in the southwest, 35 times an hour.

The traffic balance presented by Interior Minister Thomas Strobl (CDU) on Tuesday is mixed.

The most important points of the statistics:

Fewer serious injuries and more deaths

There have never been fewer serious injuries recorded in road traffic in the southwest than last year.

The Interior Ministry announced this on Tuesday and pointed to 6,143 cases, the lowest number since traffic accident statistics were introduced 70 years ago.

On the other hand, the number of accidents increased in 2023 - as did the number of traffic deaths.

Not only more drivers (+16.4 percent), but also more motorcyclists (+10.6 percent) and pedestrians (+13 percent) died on the roads of Baden-Württemberg.

“We are on the right track in terms of the number of deaths in the long term, but unfortunately we had to record a slight increase last year, which reinforces our belief that we must not let up in our efforts,” emphasized Interior Minister Strobl.

Bikers and cyclists

The police recorded 4,644 motorcycle accidents last year, around two percent more than the previous year.

73 bikers were killed, seven more than in 2022. According to the Interior Ministry, 60 percent of the traffic accidents with personal injuries were caused by the bikers themselves.

There were not only fewer seriously injured cyclists, but also fewer deaths; the number fell from 75 to 62. Of those killed, 27 were traveling on a Pedelec.

24 cyclists had an accident without any third party involvement.

Over 80 percent of fatal traffic accidents were caused by cyclists themselves.

More e-scooters - significantly more e-scooter accidents

More and more people are using e-scooters - and as a result, more and more people are having accidents with them.

Scooters were involved in 1,098 traffic accidents in 2023, almost 23 percent more than in the previous year.

Three people died in these accidents.
