The first day on which the driving ban on Kesselberg applies this year will probably be a busy day out on the serpentine road.

The police are arming themselves.

Kochel am See

– Motorcyclists will once again be subject to massive restrictions on Kesselberg from April 1st.

Driving on the route in the uphill direction (i.e. from Kochel towards Urfeld) is again prohibited between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m.

This means that the driving ban starts on a day when the serpentine route is expected to be very busy: April 1st is Easter Monday and, according to the weather forecast, it will be warm and sunny.

Driving ban: Police want to show their presence on Kesselberg

Steffen Wiedemann, head of the Kochel am See police station, expects that many motorcyclists who have a seasonal license plate from April to October will use the first possible day to ride over the Kesselberg.

But the police will also be present from the start.

Not only the local police officers, but also the motorcycle control group of the Upper Bavaria South Police Headquarters “have Easter firmly in their sights”.

Last year, the police allowed a certain “waiting period” at the beginning of April.

“That means that in the first few weeks we often only gave motorcyclists verbal warnings,” said the Kochler police chief.

“That won’t happen this year.” In addition, a “large-scale concept operation” together with supra-regional emergency services is planned again this year.

Second year of the test phase for the driving ban on Kesselberg

As reported, a two-year test phase for the new arrangement began in 2023.

“More data will now be collected in the second year to assess the situation,” says district office spokeswoman Marlis Peischer.

The accident commission - i.e. the traffic authority in the district office, the police and the Weilheim State Building Authority - had previously analyzed the situation with a view to the five previous years.

On this basis, the driving ban that now applies was introduced.

“This traffic law order is valid until October 31, 2024,” said Peischer.

As reported, the number of accidents on Kesselberg fell in the first year.

There was not a single motorcycle accident in the uphill direction in 2023, especially during the driving ban period from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m.

“We hope that the positive trend of last year will continue,” says Wiedemann.

After the trial period, the authorities want to examine the experience gained and decide what to do next.

Wiedemann thinks it is conceivable that “we still have to turn one or two screws.”

Motorcycle season on the Kesselberg has already begun

According to the district office, signs at the entrances to the municipality of Kochel am See indicate the driving ban - coming from the direction of Schlehdorf and Benediktbeuern.

According to Peischer, residents can be exempt from the regulation.

You should report to the traffic authority.

The fact that the driving ban applies from April 1st does not mean that the motorcycle season on the Kesselberg actually begins on this date.

According to Wiedemann, there were already a number of good weather days in March when “there was a lot going on” on the route.

In general, it can be observed that more and more motorcyclists register their machines not only from April to October, but also from March to November or all year round.

There has not been a motorcycle accident on Kesselberg this year - but there has been a little further between Urfeld and the town of Walchensee near the Kirchlwand tunnel.

On March 4th, a 20-year-old from Munich fell because he hit the curb.

He sustained very serious injuries.

According to police chief Wiedemann, the young man is alive.
