Although the ADFC information day literally fell through, those interested were able to be shown, for example, how to ride a Pedelec and how to properly lock their bike.

Freising – “Well, I would have gotten through the lock straight away,” was the assessment of Raphael Bierprigl, who was standing in front of a locked Pedelec in the city center with a bolt cutter last Saturday.

But Bierprigl is of course not a bicycle thief, but a Freising police chief who is currently looking for a regional gang of bicycle thieves.

In order to raise citizens' awareness of the issue of bicycle safety, the police, the General German Bicycle Club (ADFC) and the city of Freising teamed up for a large-scale information event at the Roider-Jackl fountain at the weekend.

The only problem: the weather conditions were anything but good - or to put it another way: it rained out the trio's information day.

“It would be straight away, it’s a hardware store lock for four euros,” explained Bierprigl, armed with a bolt cutter.

Also the chain lock for ten euros: more of a joke for the police officer.

What he failed with, at least with the bolt cutters, was the U-lock.

“But closing it is not enough,” said Bierprigl when asked by the FT.

His tip: In the garage or basement, chain them up in addition to locking them to be on the safe side.

There is probably a gang of bicycle thieves in the Freising region who steal up to 60 bikes per month at peak times - mainly Pedelecs.

(By the way: Everything from the region is now also available in our regular Freising newsletter.)

Further prevention measures: If a GPS tracker is not installed, attach one to the bike, note the frame number, take a photo of the bike and note any special features.

“And just report the theft to us straight away,” added police chief Andreas Wegmaier.

It was also the Freising police chief who initiated this information day with the three protagonists.

“We just wanted to once again point out the safety of cycling and Pedelecs in road traffic, as well as the topic of cycling and cycle paths in general,” emphasized Wegmaier, which is why he also called on the ADFC for the issue of bicycle training and the city of Freising for the exchange of information when it comes to cycle paths and other plans and projects.

Riding on a Pedelec is so “different”.

Meanwhile, a few meters away, Andreas Kagermeier and his colleagues from the ADFC information stand were doing a few test laps on the large course near the Roider-Jackl fountain in the pouring rain.

“The ADFC,” said Kagermeier during a short stop, “offers driving safety training, and the course here is part of it.”

What else is trained on the bike and pedelec: brakes, tires and steering, the gears and their optimal use, as well as the special features of the pedelec and e-bike.

Police Chief Tina Prüglmeier also knows how “different” riding a Pedelec is: “The bike is significantly heavier, it pulls and pushes – you have to practice that.”

What made Kagermeier particularly happy: “The police have now brought all the players together, which is a good result today.

“The weather could have been better, of course.”

What he wants: “The three of us just have to keep talking to each other now.”

At the same time, the city of Freising's mobility officer, Dominik Fuchs, would have liked to have had more conversations with the citizens - but the traditional market goers were in a hurry to get home again due to the bad weather on Saturday.

“The topic of cargo bikes is still relevant.

And today I'm answering questions about what Freising is currently planning and doing in terms of mobility," said Fuchs when asked.

The good news that he would have liked to spread more widely: “There will be no lane for drivers between Alois-Steinecker-Straße and the Korbiniansjunction – cyclists can then ride there.”

Some passers-by preferred the bus

“We’re doing a bit of advertising now,” announced Wegmaier and took a detour towards Marienplatz with his colleagues.

An older lady, who wasn't available for a test ride on the ADFC bikes, summed it up as she walked past: “Today on the bike?

In this bad weather I prefer to take the bus.” BY RICHARD LORENZ
