The project is completed: After 25 years of preparation, Sonthofen has a secured level crossing.

Sonthofen

– The level crossing at the Altstädten football field has been around for a long time.

But now, after 25 years of preparation, this important crossing has become safer: at the end of last year, the St. Andrew's crosses at the level crossing were supplemented with half-barriers and visibility lights.

The successful project has now been completed.

Sonthofen is “richer” with a secure level crossing, while neighboring Fischen has lost one of its 14 level crossings to date due to the slight shift of the crossing to the north due to construction.

Many negotiations specifically regarding this important level crossing have taken place in recent years.

Not only the football club, FC Altstädten, is at home “beyond the railway line” with a clubhouse and sports facility.

The Old Town curling team also uses their curling track here, and the police and protection dog club also has its practice area here.

In addition, many pedestrians and cyclists cross here from the local road onto the nearby Illerdamm.

Local farmers also depended on the transition to cultivate their fields.

“Thank God there have never been any serious accidents over the years,” emphasized Fischen’s mayor Bruno Sauter, but now there is more safety thanks to the half-barriers.

Since 2014/15, a “large group” of all those involved have been dealing with the project, and the railway has signaled its willingness to “do something” here.

The Old Towns Project Group was also on board with the negotiations and discussions, repeatedly raising this issue and pushing for an improvement in the situation.

However, closing the crossing had previously been considered.

It was finally recognized that this simple level crossing was no longer up to date in view of increasing traffic volumes, added Bernhard Blaas from DB Infra GO, where GO stands for oriented towards the common good.

The aim was also to make the rail connection faster and therefore more attractive.

Technically, 80 km/h could now be driven instead of 50 because of the many transitions on the route.
