Dramatic scenes on Monday evening in a house in Erkrath near Düsseldorf: A fire breaks out in an apartment.
Several people escape to balconies.
Erkrath - Firefighters rescued ten people from a burning residential building in Erkrath near Düsseldorf on Monday evening.
When the emergency services arrived at the scene of the fire, the stairwell was no longer passable, the fire department said early on Tuesday morning.
Several people took refuge on balconies at the front and back of the building.
At the back, flames were reportedly coming from an apartment on the second floor and threatening to spread to the third floor.
An emergency staircase could no longer be accessed due to the fire.
Initially, four people were rescued from the upper floors of the front in a rescue basket with a turntable ladder.
At the same time, firefighters reportedly brought the fire in the house under control.
Four people were then brought to safety from an apartment at the back using escape hoods via the stairwell and two others at the front using a turntable ladder.
More than 70 emergency services were on site.
A total of 14 residents were spotted.
According to the fire department, eight residents were accommodated in a hotel.
One person was taken to hospital with smoke poisoning.
The affected apartment burned down completely.
The cause of fire was unclear for the moment.
According to a spokesman, the Mettmann district police began investigations.
Just on Monday morning, a family of four died in a major fire in an old building in Solingen, only about 15 kilometers from Erkrath.
Several people were injured.
