The people of Haar have been guarding their maypole in the town center since the weekend.

On the first night, a gang of thieves from Aschheim attempted to steal the tree.

Vain.

Haar – Five strenuous weeks lie ahead for the Haarer maypole friends.

Until the tree is placed in front of the inn at the post office on May 1st, it must be processed and, above all, well protected from thieves.

The first attempt at theft was thwarted on the first day.

Early in the morning, the alarm clock rings for those who take part in the Maypole vigil in the coming days.

Because the maypole on Haarer Anger must be guarded.

Now the 30-meter-long tree that was felled in Wolfersberg in November arrived on the site in the pouring rain.

Decorated with a green garland and accompanied by the Hofbräuhaus horse-drawn carriage.

“Thieves are here!”

This is how the Maypole vigils begin, the daytime vigil begins at six in the morning, and then it's time to keep an eye on the tree for twelve hours, which lies between the adult education center and the community center.

And it is indeed said to be vigilant, because the Haarer tree seems to be in demand.

While the first night shift from Saturday to Sunday, which the FDP took over, went ahead without any notable events, 30 men from Aschheim tried their luck at thieving in the morning hours.

“They had apparently spread out in the area and assumed that they would have an easy time during the handover time, when the night shift was leaving and the day shift was not yet complete,” said Maibaum coordinator Alois Rath (CSU).

He was just at home when he got the call: “Thieves are here!”

Rath hurried back, the theft was already thwarted and the people of Aschheim in the Maypole Guard's tent had already been treated to free beer.

“That means being extremely careful for us,” stressed Rath, “when the first thieves arrive on the first night.”

During the guard operation, Bavarian food and drinks are available for guests in the tent; the program is peppered with cultural highlights: a games evening with the Haarer games archive (March 29th), a morning pint on Easter Sunday with an Easter egg hunt for children, a karaoke evening (April 6th ) or the Salmdorfer Stubenmusi (April 21st), parties with “The Munich Bakery Boys” (April 19th) and the Ampel Party with the D'wuidn Goaßn (April 27th).

The entire program can be seen on the Maypole Friends homepage, “eight maypole guards are not yet occupied.

We could need some reinforcements here,” said Rath.

Over the next few weeks the tree will be worked on, painted and decorated until its big appearance when it is placed on the church square.
