The Marevivo Foundation expresses "deep concern about the Decree of 7 February 2024 issued by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry for the 'Fruits and vegetables in schools' program for the 2023/2024 school year" which ignores Marevivo's request to abolish single-use plastic packaging.

"The decision to impose the use of disposable packaging (flow-pack) for the packaging and plastic gloves for the administration of fruit and vegetables represents serious environmental damage and a step backwards in the fight against plastic pollution" explains Marevivo recalling that "it estimates that 450 million tons of plastic are produced every year in the world, of which 50% consists of disposable packaging, and that over 8 million tons of plastic waste end up in our seas and oceans, 80% of the pollution of which is caused by plastic. Precisely to combat the use of disposable plastic packaging for the packaging of fruit and vegetables, Marevivo together with ZeroWaste Italy has created the #EnoughTrays campaign".

The choice to continue using single-use plastic packaging within the "Fruit and vegetables in schools" program represents, according to Marevivo, "a serious obstacle to the promotion of a sustainable lifestyle and a contradictory signal to children".

The Marevivo Foundation invites the ministry "to reconsider this decision and to commit to promoting more responsible practices, aimed at protecting the environment, the already compromised marine ecosystem and human health".
