It is still unclear whether the Isar power plant will remain in the hands of the Bad Tölz municipal utility after 2024.

The application for the extension of rights is ongoing.

Bad Tölz – The two Kaplan turbines in the Tölzer Isar power plant have been running almost continuously since 1958.

With the hydroelectric power station, the Bad Tölz municipal utility company can generate around ten million kilowatt hours of electricity every year.

But at the end of 2024, the Isar power plant's license expires.

As reported, the municipal utilities have been trying to extend water rights for years.

They have now made one step further.

Isar power plant in Bad Tölz: Extension of water rights is a difficult process

“All the documents required for the renewed application for a water permit are at the responsible engineering office for final quality assurance,” says Walter Huber, managing director of the municipal utilities, when asked by our newspaper.

“We expect to be able to submit the application to the district office in the next few weeks.

The public process will then take place.”

Extending the concession is a difficult and small-scale undertaking and requires a lot of bureaucracy from the municipal utilities.

The approval authority is the district office, which also includes the Weilheim water management office and the upper and lower nature conservation authorities in the process for the technical assessment.

The Bavarian Ministry of the Environment is also responsible.

If the concession is not extended, the Isar power plant will go into state hands under reversion law.

500-page application: a special focus on nature conservation

According to the municipal utilities, the approximately 500-page application includes, among other things, a species protection review and the accompanying landscape conservation plan.

The species protection review covers various aspects, such as the habitat of protected species near the site.

The possible effects of power plant operation on these species and the development of measures to minimize or compensate for these effects were also examined.

Last summer, the municipal utilities announced a series of measures to extend the concession.

The aim is to create a fourth weir that can also withstand extreme flooding.

In addition, the old fish ladder will be relieved by a second, larger staircase so that larger fish can also overcome the Isar power plant.

In addition, a finer rake should be installed.

However, these measures will only be implemented when the water rights are extended.
