A 24-year-old man has been charged with murder for unreasonably pushing another person onto the subway tracks and causing his death, in a busy station.

of East Harlem during rush hour on Monday afternoon, authorities reported this Tuesday.

Carlton Mcpherson, a Bronx resident, was arrested at the scene, 125th Street and Lexington Avenue, and charged that same night.

It was not immediately clear if he had an attorney.

The victim, who

has not been identified

, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident occurred on the same day that the New York Police Department announced a new operation aimed at strengthening security at subway stations.

The operation, called Fare Play, will deploy hundreds of agents to stations

to combat fare evasion

and other crimes, thereby increasing security in New York's transportation system.

The incident occurred a few blocks from where authorities detailed their plans to reinforce user security through a greater police presence in subway stations and other measures.

Despite a recent increase in crime reports in the subway, serious crimes there fell almost 3% from 2022 to 2023. During March there has been an overall decrease (15.5%) in crime in the subway.
