Nicolino di Camillo opened the first pizzeria in Würzburg in 1952.
His guests were initially primarily US soldiers stationed there.
“The American soldiers already knew pizza from Chicago,” explained Gunther Hirschfelder, professor at the Chair of Comparative Cultural Studies at the University of Regensburg, in an interview with

Finally, locals also visited the pizzeria.
Bavaria became the starting point for the triumph of pizza in Germany.

If you believe the cliché, Bavarians are actually not particularly open to new things.
“In contrast to French haute cuisine, pizza is easy to perceive and understand.
You don't need a lot of previous knowledge.
“This is very much in line with Bavaria’s desire for reduction,” Hirschfelder assumed in an interview at the time.
Numerous media outlets have repeatedly reported on Germany's oldest pizzeria - it even has a Wikipedia entry.
“The first pizzeria in Germany was Sabbie di Capri, opened by Nicolino di Camillo on March 24, 1952 in Würzburg,” it says.
Nicolino di Camillo died several years ago at the age of 93, after which his brother initially continued to run the restaurant and the tenants changed several times.
In August 2021, Dominik Schraut from Würzburg leased the Capri with his partner Ruth Lopez.
“I really liked the restaurant and its history,” he told Merkur at the time. On March 24, 2024, it will be exactly 72 years since Germany got its first pizzeria.
