The main initiator was Ralf Wawerla from AFG (left next to Scharf).

High schools have so far been left out of state subsidies for school social work.

The battle between the three high schools in the district was successful in the end.

Erding

- The fight was long and rocky despite many competitors - but successful in the end.

For the first time, high schools can also access state funding for school social work (we reported), after this type of school has so far been excluded for some unknown reason.

The first funds are available in the Bavarian state budget, which is due to be finalized on June 4th.

In addition to the district council, the parents' councils of the three high schools in the Erding district (Anne-Frank-, Korbinian-Aigner and Dorfen high school) fought, among other things, with a signature campaign in the summer of 2023, in which 2,600 supporters signed.

The pioneer of the initiative was Ralf Wawerla, chairman of the Anne Frank High School in Erding.

In a statement to our newspaper, he thanks constituency representative and Social Affairs Minister Ulrike Scharf (CSU).

She promised her help at an early stage, accepted the signatures and pledged her commitment to extending the funding to high schools.

Wawerla remembers: “After Corona and due to the influx of traumatized refugee children, the previously existing funding gap grew into a noticeably huge deficit and unfortunately still exists.” Churches and local politics supported the cause from the start, says Wawerla, “with the exception of the AfD , who would have preferred to leave the serious problems to the parents, as the group in the district council had explained.

Wawerla is now happy that all high schools in Bavaria will be able to receive state funding from September.

“The finances for jobs for social workers at high schools are now on a secure financial basis, which should remedy the previous lack of attractiveness,” the parent representative is convinced.

Until now, the district had supported youth social work in schools as a voluntary service - always explicitly stating that it wanted to stop as soon as the state fulfilled its obligation here.

But it shouldn't be that easy.

At the same time, the schools had to raise money, which mainly takes the form of sponsored runs.

According to the announcement, Wawerla now sees its goal in several respects: “It affects the parents of around 320,000 students at high schools throughout Bavaria.

All studies show the importance of social work.

What makes the graduate engineer particularly happy: “In the district, everyone involved has achieved something through their solidarity and commitment to society that parent associations at the state level have not been able to achieve for years.” He was happy to work for this and would like to thank all of the supporters. “The same applies to politicians, who correctly recognized the explosiveness of the demand and acted.”

Now the contribution that the students and their parents have made to the benefit of the elders through isolation at home due to the pandemic is finally being recognized and will finally help to reduce the resulting consequences." The parents, Wawerla assures, "will provide the support continue to support you with your own contributions.”

In the meantime, the district council has also taken up the ball again.

Ulla Dieckmann (SPD) called on the district committee to “apply for funding very quickly”.

Their concern is that “the funding pot could quickly be empty”.

That's why she appealed to District Administrator Martin Bayerstorfer (CSU) to quickly convene the youth welfare committee.

The district office, as the school authority, is in discussions with all three high schools.

“Only one person has submitted an application,” said Bayerstorfer.

First of all, the need must be determined.

What he regrets is that the Free State will not take over the funding that the district has so far provided.

This is what the general funding guidelines say.
