Standard herbs are useful, decorative - and often quite expensive.

You can also easily grow the trees yourself.

From rosemary to lemon thyme to sage – tall stems are available from a wide variety of herbs.

Not only do they smell and taste good, they also beautify any balcony or garden.

Your advantage: The narrow trunk takes up hardly any space, so gardeners can store additional flowers or herbs at its feet.

This creates beautiful arrangements in pots, baskets or borders.

However, the comparatively expensive price deters some hobby gardeners - garden centers charge around 30 euros for larger specimens.

It is cheaper to grow the standard tree yourself so that you can enjoy fresh herbs from your own garden.

Grow your own herbs in just a few steps: Here's how to do it

A little patience, a pair of sharp secateurs and a small herb pot - that's all you need to get thyme etc. to shoot up.

Then proceed step by step:

  • Choose a shoot - according to

    Sueddeutsche.de

, it should be particularly strong and straight.

  • Remove the protruding branches on the left and right: To do this, place the scissors as far as possible on the trunk and cut close to it.

  • Transfer the plant to a pot with soil.

  • Take a wooden stick or support stick and attach the shoot to it with rope or floral wire - this way it will grow straight up.

  • Once the shoot has reached the desired height for the tree, it is time to cut the top.

The stem then begins to sprout a few centimeters below.

  • Shape the crown by also shortening the side shoots so that they branch out further.

  • Low-growing herbs or flowers fit perfectly under a tall stem.

If you find stems too boring, you can also vary the growth habit.

It is possible, for example, to leave two or three main graters and carefully twist them together.

    This creates a braided look.

And crooked trunks also have their charm when they bend their crowns over a border.

Caring for tall stems – when is the right time to prune?

A fully grown standard tree needs continued attention - this is the only way it can maintain an even, round crown.

    According to My Beautiful Garden,

    hobby gardeners should

regularly remove shoots on the main trunk, as well as branches that protrude from the crown.

The best time for extensive pruning is in spring, before the stem sprouts again.

Pruning strengthens the plant and stimulates growth.
