Which chefs will be allowed to hang the famous red metal sign with one or more stars in front of the restaurant this year?
Probably the most important award in the cooking industry offers a surprise for Baden-Württemberg.
Hamburg/Stuttgart - The number of gourmet restaurants in the southwest remains at a high level - but Bavaria is replacing Baden-Württemberg in terms of the number of starred restaurants this year.
The new edition of the “Guide Michelin” lists 73 addresses in the southwest and 79 in the larger neighboring country, as was announced on Tuesday evening in Hamburg.
For years, Baden-Württemberg was the nationwide leader in the number of starred restaurants.
The new edition of the gourmet guide, which is also available digitally as an app, is likely to trigger particularly loud cheers in five hotels in the southwest - because they are receiving new awards.
The “SEO Küchenhandwerk” team in Langenargen on Lake Constance is now cooking in the league of two-star restaurants.
Chef Roland Pieber and sous chef Kathrin Stöcklöcker impressed the anonymous test eaters with their eight-course menus.
Four other restaurants can look forward to a new star: the “Restaurant 1950” in Hayingen (Reutlingen district), “ZUR WEINSTEIGE” in Stuttgart, “Cédric” in Weinstadt (Rhein-Neckar district) and the “Jacobi” in Freiburg.
Two top addresses further in the northern Black Forest
In Baiersbronn in the Freudenstadt district, the star density remains particularly high.
As expected, the “Restaurant Bareiss” and the “Schwarzwaldstube” defend their three stars.
This means that the town in the northern Black Forest remains the only one in the country with two three-star restaurants - and that with around 15,000 inhabitants.
The “1789” and the “Schlossberg” can each continue to have one star.
Another award goes to the “Schwarzwaldstube”: sommelier Stéphane Gass is honored for his “in-depth wine knowledge” and is therefore one of the best wine experts in the country from the Michelin inspectors’ point of view.
Young chef from Weinheim honored
One of the youngest top chefs in Germany is Cédric Staudenmayer, who runs “Cédric” in Weinstadt.
At just 25 years old, he and his team won his first star and were also honored with the Young Chef Award.
He impressed the test eaters with his “regionally and seasonally influenced modern cuisine”.
Normal and green star in Freiburg
After three restaurants in Freiburg were awarded one star last year, another one will be added in 2024: the “Jacobi”.
There, Christoph Kaiser's team is honored with a normal star and an additional green star.
Green stars have been awarded for four years and, according to Michelin, are intended to highlight particularly sustainable cuisine.
For example, we cook with seasonal and regional ingredients as well as meat from species-appropriate animal husbandry.
In addition to the “Jacobi”, there is another restaurant nationwide that received a normal and a green star in 2024: the “Zwanzig23 by Lukas Jakobi” in Düsseldorf.
There are currently 77 restaurants with a green star in Germany, 18 of them in the southwest.
The state capital remains the front runner
With nine addresses, Stuttgart still has the most starred restaurants in a city in the southwest.
The “Speisemeisterei” retains its two stars.
“ZUR WEINSTEIGE” receives a new star this year, and seven more defend their award.
By the way: The inspectors distributed the restaurants with one star almost equally between Baden and Württemberg.
Only in the even more elegant two- and three-star restaurants is there a clear focus on Baden.

Who has lost his star
Seven restaurants were removed from the star list - more than in any other federal state this year.
In most cases there was a simple reason: The restaurants in Bodman-Ludwigshafen in the Konstanz district, Heidelberg, Horben near Freiburg, Konstanz, Mannheim and Ulm were closed over the past year.
The “zeit|geist” in Weingarten (Karlsruhe district) has had its star stripped because it is now pursuing a different concept.
This is how testing is done
The Michelin Guide stars are the most important award for top chefs worldwide.
The first Michelin stars in Germany were awarded in 1966.
Around two dozen experts are regularly deployed in this country - they always test the restaurants anonymously and repeatedly.
The “Michelin Guide” is now published in 41 countries, including Europe, the USA and Asia.
The French tire manufacturer of the same name is behind the restaurant guide.
But there are other restaurant guides.
“Gault&Millau” also appears regularly as an important international gourmet guide.
He awards 0 to 20 points for the restaurants.
The specialist magazine “Der Feinschmecker” is also well known in Germany.
