Highlights: The day Penelope Cruz had to do Salma Hayek's hair and makeup in the dark for a premiere. “We did it with candles, and it didn’t go bad!” he remembers with a laugh. A passion for aesthetics and skills that the Lancôme muse would have developed during her childhood, thanks to her mother. "Somehow, with everything we've seen over the years, curl, dry, cut, straighten or curl, we've learned to do it too," she says.

In an interview with the Spanish edition of ELLE, Penelope Cruz looks back on this moment when she improvised as a hairdresser and makeup artist for her colleague.

If she hadn't had a career in cinema, Penelope Cruz could have been a hairdresser.

The proof is that the Ferrari

actress

has already successfully exercised her talents on her friend Salma Hayek, as she relates in an interview with the Spanish

ELLE

magazine published this Wednesday March 20.

Indeed, his co-star in the film

Bandidas

would have entrusted him entirely with his beauty in unforeseen circumstances.

“One time my friend Salma [Hayek] told me, 'There's a power outage at home, the makeup artist and hair stylist can't come, and I have a premiere. I want you to come and do my hair and make-up.”

And I [say], “come on, let’s try.”

We did it with candles, and it didn’t go bad!” he remembers with a laugh.

Like mother, like daughter

A passion for aesthetics and skills that the Lancôme muse would have developed during her childhood, thanks to her mother.

“I spent a lot of time in the salon where she worked, because it wasn't just a hair salon: we also did manicures, pedicures, waxing... My sister (Mónica Cruz) and I , like Pili and Mili (a duo of Spanish comic actresses made up of twins, editor's note), went to eat there every day and, after school, we came back,” she says.

“There, we observed a lot, both the work of my mother and her colleagues, and the kind of therapy session that was created between them and the clients.

They weren't just going to change their appearance, it was a kind of confessional."

This “therapeutic” dimension of aesthetics arouses the curiosity of young Penelope, who ends up acquiring new skills.

“I pretended to be studying, but in reality I was observing all these scenes.

And one thing I understood there was that the goal of these women, more than to feel pretty, was to take time for themselves, a ritual of self-care,” continues- her, explaining that "somehow, with everything we've seen over the years, curl, dry, cut, straighten or curl, we've learned to do it too."

We would happily entrust our hair to him.
