Highlights: The large games world in the Schloßberghalle was well received again. The German games award “Game of the Year” is one of the most important awards for board games worldwide. Adults pay four euros entry, but you can stay all day and borrow and try out new games from the Peitinger Youth Center's large collection next to the hall entrance. The lucky one was the one who was able to get hold of “Challengers!”, the expert game of the year 2023, and a table.

Almost all tables were always occupied: families with children, connoisseurs and just those who enjoy playing: the range of visitors was wide at the Peiting Board Game Days.

Board games are booming, especially since Corona.

And they have long since outgrown their infancy.

Children and adults who enjoyed playing were able to see this for themselves at the board game days in Peiting at the weekend.

Peiting – Try out new games, find out about trends, talk shop, just have fun and take one or two “treasures” home with you: the efforts of the mostly volunteer helpers in the run-up to the Peiting Board Game Days were rewarded by a huge turnout.

On Saturday afternoon, for example, it was really difficult to get a free table.

At one of them, four adults were puzzling over a new release from the “Game of the Year” selection list, at another a family of elementary school children was having fun with a modern and more action-packed version of “Floh hupf,” and in the back a clique was having one Almost classic: The eight-year-old “Mysterium”, an elaborate cooperative game whose kids version was named “Children's Game of the Year” in 2023.

Play all day for four euros

The German games award “Game of the Year” is one of the most important awards for board games worldwide, and so the 2023 award-winning and nominated games were constantly on loan on both days.

That's how the board game days work: Adults pay four euros entry, but you can stay all day and borrow and try out new games from the Peitinger Youth Center's large collection next to the hall entrance.

The Juze team, mostly volunteers, tested the games beforehand so that employees could guide even the trickiest new releases.

Huglfinger Rita Modl, a well-known game designer, was also there at the weekend, who made her games available and explained them.

The lucky one was the one who was able to get hold of “Challengers!”, the expert game of the year 2023, and a table.

As a “deck building game” it is very trendy: a game that is about building a deck of cards and using them profitably.

What trends are there in the gaming sector?

What are other trends in gaming?

“In Germany alone, around 1,000 new and different board games are released every year,” says Philipp Elste from the Peitinger Juze team.

It's not easy to really filter out trends, but there are already some: "In addition to 'deck building' and party games, there are also cooperative games - although that's going back a bit," he lists.

Games dealer Mike Häring, who was represented at the Bettspieltage with a stand from his Kempten shop “Heldenschmiede”, added: “Role-playing games are still in demand, while 'escape room games' like the 'Exit series' from Kosmos-Verlag “Many games are also about environmental issues,” adds Jürgen Schaffarczik, head of Juze, and adds another innovation from the game manufacturers: “The games are no longer shrink-wrapped.”

Visiting the Peiting Board Game Days was worth it

Around the fourth round, the strategy needed to succeed in “Challengers!” becomes clear and things pick up speed.

Bright lights, noise in the hall?

Long forgotten when immersed in the game.

Coffee and cake in between – one of the helpers is a pastry chef and contributed delicious “princess cakes”.

A little more browsing at the “Heldenschmiede” stand and at the flea market on stage: a visit to the Peiting Board Game Days was worth it.

The Peitinger Juze team counted more than 180 visitors, young and old, this Saturday.

On Sunday there were at least as many visitors, if not more, on site.

Because it is the classic family day.

Board games are also booming in the Peiting library, at least that was the trend that Corona apparently triggered.

You can rent lots of games there.
