An app is intended to turn the Oberland into a smart tourism region.

But the live information displayed is still set for winter.

It is still too early for a change of season, explains the project manager.

District

– March is not quite over yet, but winter has already left.

Despite the occasional flakes from the weekend.

But it hasn't completely disappeared yet, because on the new app live.tegernsee-schliersee.de, which the municipal company Regionalentwicklung Oberland (REO) launched at the beginning of February, users are still provided with "current live information from the region for your next Winter’s Day” promised.

Tourism app is set to winter until Easter

Christian Greilinger, who is also responsible for the new app as project manager for tourism development, digitization and data management, knows the problem: “We are about to switch the pages to the summer.” This should happen after Easter.

Unfortunately, when planning, it was not foreseeable that the winter would be so short.

Anyone who gives winter a chance on the app despite the onset of spring will be confronted with closed trails.

There is no more information from the ski areas and the current snow depths are zero.

After all, the weather is delivered in real time by kachelmannwetter.com - regardless of the season.

And the webcams are still in operation.

Summer is a challenge for REO developers

According to Greilinger, summer is a challenge compared to winter.

Because hiking trails are simply there - there is no service to report whether they are open or closed or when you can use them.

“Summer needs less data.”

Even though the system is already in operation, it is still clear that the project is still under construction.

Greilinger also emphasized this at the presentation in the Schliersee local history museum in the presence of State Parliament President Ilse Aigner and Agriculture Minister Michaela Kaniber (we reported): “It is a learning system that gets better and better over time.” Furthermore, the lead-up to the summer preparation has been unusually short since the start in February.

“Winter normally starts on our app in November.” Then there is more time to prepare for the summer.

REO wants to “fill the program with life little by little”

For these reasons, the new app is currently not being advertised.

“If we have also integrated our forecasts, we will do more marketing,” explains Greilinger.

“We don’t have a finished product at the moment.” The launch in February only made it usable.

The forecasts in particular are a big challenge because they use calendar events in conjunction with the weather forecast and previous experience to show how the capacity utilization of various destinations will develop in the next few days.

“We still have to enter a lot of historical data.”

Some tests are also needed.

Overall, there is still a lot to be done, says Greilinger: “It is not yet the product that it should be.

There's a lot of innovation in it - you can't just pull it out of a drawer.” The infrastructure and the basic features of the app were programmed in 2023.

“Now it’s about filling the program with life little by little.”
