The main opposition alliance in Venezuela, the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD),
managed to register a candidacy for the presidential elections on July 28
, after denouncing obstacles in the nomination system, the electoral authority reported on Tuesday.
Elvis Amoroso, president of the National Electoral Council (CNE), first released the name of
Edmundo González Urrutia
among the list of registered candidates, and then that of the Democratic Unity Roundtable (MUD) party, which absorbed the current Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD). ).
Corina Yoris, nominated by María Corina Machado as a candidate, was left out without any explanation being presented so far.
Eugenio Martínez, a journalist specialized in electoral issues, indicated that the candidate that the Unitary Platform managed to nominate at the last minute before the National Electoral Council (CNE) for the presidential elections is Edmundo González Urrutia.
“The strategy is to try to replace him with a unity candidate
or ultimately adhere to a candidacy already admitted
,” he added.
“To specify: the MUD has a postulate, Edmundo González.
This postulate can be admitted by the CNE as a candidate.
This candidate could be replaced by another (previously admitted) or, in theory, by a new candidate who meets all the requirements of the law,” he stated.
Omar Barboza, general secretary of the Unitary Platform, confirmed to CNN in Spanish that after a 12-hour extension given by the CNE they were able to register him as a candidate,
waiting to be able to replace him.
Edmundo González Urrutia is a Venezuelan diplomat, internationalist, with a master's degree in International Relations from the American University Washington DC. He was general director of international policy of the Foreign Ministry,
ambassador of Venezuela in Argentina
and ambassador of Venezuela in Algeria.
He was part of the International Editorial Board of El Nacional.
