Reichersbeuern –

Things could hardly be going better for actor Klaus Steinbacher, who comes from Reichersbeuern.

One role follows the next – in well-known projects.

The 30-year-old is currently working on the set for the second season of the hit series “Oktoberfest 1900,” in which he plays the young brewer Roman Hoflinger.

Another series, the political thriller “Tower Shadow”, with the Isarwinkler in a leading role, is already in the can and is just waiting to be broadcast.

Mr. Steinbacher, you are currently in great demand as an actor and are featured in many well-known film and television projects.

How do you decide which role to take on?

I decide whether I accept a role based on my gut feeling.

It's important to me that I feel like I'm emotionally involved right away.

The role of Roman Hoflinger in “Oktoberfest 1900” was actually offered to you at the Oktoberfest...

After a performance in the Schauburg in Munich, I went to the Oktoberfest and was already quite late.

When I was there, we ran out of just one measure before the tent closed.

Then the director Hannu Salonen approached me with his friendly Finnish accent and asked if I would be interested in taking part in the project.

At first I thought he was just kidding.

We then moved on and had a fun evening.

The next day I woke up and thought that he had told me a lot of nonsense about the Oktoberfest series.

A week later I got a call asking when I could come to the casting.

Which was obviously successful.

How did you prepare for the role?

For me it is really important to immerse yourself in the world and the inner life of the character.

There is a lot of research involved.

For “Oktoberfest 1900” I did a long beer and Oktoberfest tour in Munich.

I absorbed a lot on a tour of the breweries and taverns.

You even received a “Blue Panther” award for the role in 2021.

Was the occupation a big career booster?

I was then able to film more exciting series and films.

I am very grateful for that.

What was also important for me was being cast as Franz Beckenbauer in “The Emperor”.

I had a lot of fun with this shoot.

There were critical words about “Oktoberfest 1900” from the festival tent hosts and Wiesn boss Clemens Baumgärtner, saying that the traditional festival was being put in a bad light.

Can you still be seen in the tents since then?

I still really enjoy going to the Oktoberfest and luckily I never had any problems after the series.

Although I now have a different relationship with Oktoberfest.

I have the history much more in my head when I walk across Theresienwiese and of course I often think about the filming.

A two-part sequel is now being filmed.

What appeal does the role of the son of a Munich brewery dynasty have for you?

I found the role very exciting when I read the scripts for the first season.

And in the sequel, Roman Hoflinger undergoes a transformation that is at least as exciting, although unfortunately I can't reveal too much about it yet.

Klaus Steinbacher plays a neo-Nazi in “Tower Shadow” - “I thought about it for a long time”

Another series with you in a leading role has already been filmed.

“Tower Shadow” is about the taking of three neo-Nazis hostage by a former Mossad agent.

Here, too, you were asked early on to play one of the extremists...

The author Peter Grandl actually approached me about “Tower Shadow” a year and a half before filming began.

And while filming another project, the director Hannu Salonen asked me if I wanted to take part in “Tower Shadow” afterwards.

One thing resulted from the other.

Did you find it difficult to decide to take on the role of a neo-Nazi?

I thought for a long time whether I wanted this.

After all, this has to do with an ideology that I don't want to know anything about.

It was a very big effort; there were also many difficult moments for me during filming.

Which ones, for example?

This started with the mask test.

I got tattoos with symbols, it literally makes you shudder.

When I was learning the texts, I found it very difficult to say these slogans.

You have to find a way to deal with it.

How did you do that?

I tried to focus on the character's human qualities and goals, far away from this evil ideology.
