Dancing is prohibited on silent holidays such as Good Friday.

In Nuremberg, a federal government wanted to obtain exceptions - without success.

This could end up in court.

Nuremberg - Criticism of the ban on dancing on so-called silent days is increasing.

Protest celebrations against the ban are planned in several Bavarian cities.

However, in Nuremberg this could become a legal case.

The city of Nuremberg has banned planned protests against the ban on dancing on Good Friday and other silent days.

The applications of the religiously critical Federation for Freedom of Mind (bfg) for exemptions for 14 venues under the slogan “Nuremberg wants to dance” were rejected, as Robert Pollack, deputy head of the public order office, told the German Press Agency.

There were demonstrations against the dancing ban in Munich as early as 2023.

Silent holidays: exceptions possible, but Nuremberg application rejected

Although the Federal Constitutional Court ruled in 2016 that exceptions to the ban on dancing on Christian holidays such as Good Friday are generally possible, the applications in Nuremberg were too general.

“We simply received a blanket application for 14 locations, for 14 clubs, from which it is not clear why an exemption is justified,” said Pollack.

That's why no permits could be issued.

Since the Federal Constitutional Court's ruling, "exceptions are possible on Good Friday and all other eight 'Silent Days' if festivals and celebrations are an expression of an ideological demarcation from Christian creeds," emphasized Assunta Tammelleo, chairwoman of the bfg Munich.

“This applies to the events and parties of the bfg Munich.” She announced that she would take legal action against the refused approval in Nuremberg.

In this case, the Ansbach Administrative Court would be called upon and would have to decide quickly.

Protest actions against silent holidays in Munich and Regensburg

The Association for Freedom of Thought has also called for protests in Munich and Regensburg, a “club revolution” against the ban on dancing on public holidays.

According to Assunta, the events were approved there.

A demonstration against the ban on dancing on Silent Days and for the separation of church and state is also planned for the afternoon of Maundy Thursday on Munich's Königsplatz.
