In an open letter published on his social networks, the mayor of Vienna, Thierry Kovacs (LR), sharply attacks the morning lowering of the speed to 50 km/h on the 8 kilometers of the A7 motorway located at southern entrance to the Lyon metropolis.
Since March 20, state services have launched the experiment with a carpooling lane, effective only between 7 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. on weekdays on this section, with a new speed limit over this time slot.
The councilor of the Isère sub-prefecture located around thirty kilometers south of Lyon, announces that he has contacted the prefect of the Rhône, Fabienne Buccio, to reconsider
“this unreasonable reduction”
.
“If the objectives pursued by this measure (incentivizing carpooling, streamlining traffic, reducing noise and air pollution) are laudable and shared by the region's elected officials, I can only be outraged by the conditions of this implementation and the reality on the ground
, attacks this close friend of Laurent Wauquiez
.
This limitation of 50 km/h is absolutely not realistic and therefore respected.
The speed differences between the few vehicles respecting this limit and all the others who continue to drive at much higher speeds cause major safety problems.
Educational radars and police checks
The reduction in accidents is one of the measurement criteria of this experiment, in addition to environmental ones.
With an average of 102,000 vehicles per day combined, the A7 motorway experiences congestion problems during rush hours, mainly in the morning in the direction from South to North.
The prefecture ensures that this reserved lane makes it possible to reduce the number of vehicles by encouraging carpooling.
And therefore pollution, nuisances as well as traffic jams.
Police checks and the installation of educational radars should make it possible to raise user awareness.
This is already the case on the following section, in the metropolis of Lyon, which also benefits from a carpooling lane but with a speed limit of 70km/h this time.
Thierry Kovacs regrets that the request to lower the speed to 90 km/h on the territory of the community of communes of Vienne Condrieu, which he chairs, has on the other hand
“still not been taken into account by the State »
.
