The mountain railway operators can look back on a relatively warm winter.

This year the ski season at Brauneck ended relatively early.

At the end of February, skiing was only possible under difficult conditions.

Mountain railway operators can look back on a tough winter season.

At Brauneck, the supporting cable of the gondola lift will be replaced during the upcoming overhaul.

A big undertaking.

Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen

– The winter season in the mountains has been completely over for a few days.

The mountain railways are now gradually preparing for their overhaul work and for spring.

The ski balance, however, is rather mixed.

“Due to the early onset of winter, we were able to start the season early.

During the Christmas and carnival holidays, the facilities and slopes were open without restrictions,” says the head of the Brauneck-Bergbahn, Antonia Asenstorfer.

The big but: "From the beginning of February it was unusually mild, so we couldn't make snow again." Although there was fresh snow on the mountain every now and then, it persisted "due to the thaw and the precipitation that kept turning into rain." never long enough, explains Asenstorfer.

Their conclusion: “We were very satisfied with the number of visitors in December and January, and also in February until the end of the carnival holidays.

Unfortunately, the rest of February and March fell short of expectations.” Despite the early start, it was a mixed season.

There were a total of 101 days of skiing at Brauneck.

Mild winter - tough skiing record

There is no euphoria about the ski season at the lifts in Wegscheid.

Andreas Adlwarth, operator of the facilities and shops on the Jaudenhang, says: “This year it was quite early for us due to the weather.” According to Adlwarth, the facilities on the Jaudenhang have been shut down for over five weeks, while operations on the Draxlhang went on for around two weeks longer.

“It's okay that the Easter holidays are canceled, but the fact that carnival wasn't a thing at Jaudenhang hurt.” Now he's hoping for a successful spring.

“We will put the summer toboggan run into operation in May.”

Complex overhaul of the Brauneck railway

The cable car at Brauneck runs until Easter Monday.

“We will start the revision on April 2nd,” said Asenstorfer.

This time a big measure is coming up.

“The support cable needs to be replaced.

This is quite a complex job that only needs to be done about every 20 years.” If everything goes according to plan, the mountain railway will start summer operations on April 27th.

“Then we’ll start the season straight away with the ‘Alpen Cup’ – an international paragliding competition.”

On the Blomberg, however, the revision work has already been completed.

“We have a different cycle in this regard – we are already completely through and have the TÜV tests behind us,” says Bergbahn boss Hannes Zintel.

He also looks back on a slow winter season.

“It was really very humbling.

We had two good weekends in January and February, otherwise it was pickle season.” Due to the weather, the winter toboggan run was only open on four days.

“But then we had record sales.

Demand is unbroken, but the weather just hasn't cooperated.

It was too warm.”

Now he and his team are looking forward to spring.

The season has been underway at Blomberg since Saturday and all facilities are in operation.

“We are looking forward to the warmer season and the good weather that is expected for Easter.”

Revision at the Herzogstand after Easter holidays

The spring overhaul of the Herzogstandbahn is still pending.

“We are still going during the Easter holidays and will then be in overhaul from April 15th to April 26th,” says the operations manager of the Herzogstandbahn, Jörg Findeisen.

This year only standard work would be outstanding.

“TÜV was already in the fall,” says Findeisen.

From the change to summer time on Sunday, the mountain railway will also adjust its opening times.

“Then we’ll drive another 90 minutes longer.”

In contrast to the other companies, he is much happier about the winter.

“The natural snow lasted surprisingly long this year and we had a record year with 28 days of skiing,” he says.

“It's still not the world and it can't be compared with larger ski areas.” The Herzogstand remains a summer mountain, “but of course we're happy about the winter, after all it was the best first quarter we've ever had,” explains Findeisen.

Still wintry conditions on the Fahrenberg

If you want to take a trip to the Herzogstand during the Easter holidays, you shouldn't be deceived by the current spring-like weather in the valley.

The cable car boss emphasizes: “You still need winter hiking clothing, especially shoes.

Crampons don't hurt either, because there are still some icy and snow-covered sections of path in shady places on the mountain," he warns.
