An 85-year-old pensioner from Gauting recently received an email regarding a lucrative investment opportunity.

After clicking on a link in the email, he came to a website where a well-known television presenter and equally well-known German rock singer were supposedly talking about a lucrative investment opportunity.

Gauting - In anticipation of a lucrative financial transaction, an 85-year-old pensioner from Gauting entered his data, including his mobile phone number, on a fraud website.

He was then contacted on his cell phone and asked to deposit a sum of 250 euros into an account as an initial investment.

Since the pensioner does not have online banking, he generated a corresponding transfer in writing via bank deposit.

He also revealed his credit card details and then sent a photo of his identity card because an account was supposed to be created for him in Lithuania, to which he was then supposed to transfer a further 19,000 euros.

The police do not yet know whether the account or another account was actually opened in the name of the Gautingen pensioner.

Fortunately, the pensioner was warned by a bank employee at his house bank when he tried to transfer the required 19,000 euros or the bank employee was able to stop him from making the transfer.

The pensioner then confided in his stepdaughter, who went with him to the Gautingen police to file a complaint.

According to the current status of the investigation, it appears that he fortunately only suffered damage of 250 euros from the so-called initial deposit, informs the Gauting police station.

Be careful with supposedly lucrative financial transactions

The implemented link takes the victims to a fake website where prominent people, in this case a television presenter and a German rock singer, talk about a lucrative investment opportunity.

These celebrities are used to bait the victims, so to speak.

Afterwards (including the 85-year-old Gautinger), after the first transfer of 250 euros, they are given access data for a website where they can see their alleged investment account (with the initial investment of 250 euros).

The account then makes a mega profit in the first few days, with the 250 euros often turning into several thousand euros.

The perpetrators then call again and again and pressure the injured parties to make further payments, which are significantly higher.

Due to the already high profits that are supposed to have been made, the injured parties lose their shyness and are prepared to invest even more money - even with significantly higher amounts.

The perpetrators often try to put pressure on (for example, the offer is only available for a limited time) in order to give the injured party no time to think about it.

This is how citizens protect themselves from fraud

The police advise: Never give out sensitive data such as online banking access data, TANs, PINs and passwords over the phone.

Consumers repeatedly receive dubious calls from alleged bank employees with the intention of obtaining secret and personal information.

Please note that employees of credit institutions never ask for this sensitive data.

Never enter certain key combinations on your PC, as this may enable remote access to your PC.

Never send a copy of your ID with a photo via email or WhatsApp.
