Why the FlixBus lost control and fell into the embankment remains unknown.

However, according to initial findings, the police have ruled out a collision with another vehicle.

“As things stand, we can rule out that other vehicles were involved in the accident,” a spokeswoman told the

As pictures from the accident site show, the affected section is a straight, three-lane road.

Update from March 27th, 2:27 p.m.:

As the police report, the driver of the Flixbus that crashed on the A9 near Leipzig is not believed to be among the fatalities.

Details about his health were not given.

According to police, at least five people were killed and more than a dozen injured in the accident.

The spokesman was unable to provide any information about the cause of the accident.

It was initially unclear when the bus from the provider Flixbus would be recovered.

According to the police, the lane to Berlin should be reopened in the early afternoon, the route to Munich will remain closed for the time being.

Saxony's Interior Minister Armin Schuster (CDU) has obtained an overview of the serious accident with a Flixbus on the A9 near Leipzig.

According to police reports, at least 5 people were killed and more than 20 were injured.

Schuster expressed his condolences to the families of those who died on Wednesday.

He also hopes “that the injured will get better quickly.”

Schuster thanked the rescue workers for their professional efforts.

It was a “difficult situation” that was “handled excellently”.

He saw in the firefighters' faces “how difficult these scenes were.”

Current accident on the A9 near Leipzig: Police publish details about the Flixbus

Update from March 27th, 1:36 p.m.:

The Saxony police announced that the coach that crashed was a FlixBus with route number 234.

The bus started from Berlin at 8 a.m. with the destination Zurich.

According to Flixbus spokesman Sebastian Meyer, the next stop was planned for the early afternoon in Nuremberg.

There were 53 passengers and two drivers on board at the time of the accident.

In the early afternoon, emergency services righted the accident vehicle using cable winches.

A tent has been set up to treat seriously injured people and some people have already been taken to area hospitals.

Rescue work is ongoing - the A9 motorway is expected to remain closed until the evening

Leipzig – On Wednesday (March 27th) there was a serious accident involving a Flixbus on the A9 near Leipzig.

As the

reports, the coach left the road at around 9.45 a.m. between the Wiedemar junction and the Schkeuditzer Kreuz.

With a focus on emergency services, the

LVZ

reports at least five deaths.

Up to 50 other people are said to have been injured in the accident - all clinics in the region have been informed.

The clinic staff is preparing shock rooms and operating rooms for the injured.

“The teams are standing by and the shock rooms are also prepared,” emphasized Tina Mühlbauer, spokeswoman for the Helios Clinic Schkeuditz, to the newspaper.

There are currently four rescue helicopters and numerous ambulances in use.

The road in the direction of Munich is completely closed.

Motorists were asked to keep an emergency lane clear.
