In every family, some cousins are more annoying than others.
Each group in the European Parliament can attest to this as the ideological and cultural differences are sometimes strong between elected officials from different countries.
French socialists are facing this head-on on the issue of free trade agreements.
“If there is a divergence we have with the rest of the group, it is indeed this
,” confirms outgoing MEP Christophe Clergeau.
Many of their European comrades are still anchored in a social-liberal logic, which has almost disappeared in France.
What is felt during the votes: on these subjects, the French tricolor deputies find themselves in a minority within their group of the European Socialist Party (PSE).
“They are ten years behind us
,” believes a PS elected official.
Latest example: 93% of the group voted in favor of the agreement with New Zealand in January.
The French, for their part, voted against.
The socialists govern Europe together with the Macronists and the right.
For what results?
Their groups together support free trade agreements, budgetary austerity that undermines our public services or the energy market that increases bills
