Not just images, videos, ideas for a novel and an email: generative artificial intelligence can also represent a useful tool for protecting users' browsing online.
During 2023, Google relied on Gemini's next-generation AI to block more than 5.5 billion ads that violated the platform's usage policies.
This is an average of over 9 thousand ads banned per minute.
Figures included in the most recent Google Ads Safety Report, which refers to the performance of advertisers' campaigns in the previous twelve months.
In general, the American giant has limited over 6.9 billion ads and suspended more than 12.7 million advertisers for serious policy violations, almost double those of 2022. Google has also removed ads from over 2.1 billion pages .
Part of the credit for such a rise in controls and therefore in evaluations goes to generative artificial intelligence.
“Our security teams have long used AI-powered machine learning to enforce policies at scale,” explains Duncan Lennox, vice president and general manager of Ads Privacy and Safety at Google.
"However, they are models that need to be updated, unlike Large Language Models (Llm) which can quickly review and interpret large quantities of content, with advanced reasoning capabilities, to quickly spot fake adverts, fraudulent services and scams".
Overall, Google blocked or removed 206.5 million advertisements for misrepresentation and 273.4 million financial services advertisements.
The fight against fraudulent advertising is an ongoing commitment that the group also carries out with organizations such as GlobalAnti-Scam Alliance and Stop Scams UK.
