Former Senator Joe Lieberman, who was the Democratic Party's vice presidential candidate in the 2000 United States presidential election, died at the age of 82 following complications from a fall - this is what his family said this evening (Wednesday).
Lieberman was the first Jew, and so far the only one, who was nominated by one of the two major parties for the position of Vice President of the United States. He served in the Senate from 1989 to 2013 as a representative of Connecticut.
"His beloved wife, Hadassah, and his family members were with him when he died," his family said. "Senator Lieberman's love for God, his family and America continued throughout his life for the public interest."
His funeral will be held on Friday, in his hometown of Stamford, Connecticut.
Lieberman ran as Al Gore's running mate in the 2000 election, which ended with the victory of Republican candidate George W. Bush by a few hundred votes in Florida. Four years later, he ran in the primaries for the party's presidential nomination, but dropped out early.
