The Klostergut Schlehdorf eco-operative is defending itself against criticism from residents that it is not fulfilling its obligation to clear out the Karpfsee outlet.

Schlehdorf – As reported, residents wrote to the community.

Their concern: If the drain from the Karpfsee into the Kochelsee is not cleared of flotsam and the like, the groundwater level of the Karpfsee could increase and, as a result, the local cellars could fill up.

At its most recent meeting, the local council therefore appealed to the cooperative, as the owner of the lake, to fulfill its obligation from a registered easement from 1921 and to clear up the process in March.

But that won't be done, says Sebastian Kukula, one of the cooperative's board members.

Because the stream is not allowed to be cleared out at this time of year because of the closed and spawning season.

This will only be possible from August 15th.

Kukula also emphasizes that the obligation under the easement does not mean that the owner of the lake is obliged to clear out the drain.

Rather, “we are prohibited from damming the lake.”

Letter to the local council

The monastery estate has now addressed the community in a statement.

In it, those responsible inform the municipality “how we will deal with the situation currently and in the future” and emphasize that the cooperative cares about good cooperation with the residents.

This “of course” also includes compliance with contractual obligations, such as those arising from ownership of the Karpfsee and the surrounding areas.

However, since there is currently a planned water flow, clearing the drain would not lead to a lowering of the water level in the lake.

“Gravel bank still present”

The assumption, which has been repeatedly expressed in the village that the lake has been gradually dammed up over decades, “we cannot understand,” it says in the statement.

Despite opinions to the contrary, a gravel bank that previously served as a swimming area is still there, as can be clearly seen from aerial photos.

However, the gravel bank is now almost completely overgrown by alders and willows.

The reason for this change is that gravel is no longer taken here, as was probably the case in earlier times.

Since the beaver began building dams at the beginning of the drainage ditch from 2022 at the latest, the cooperative made a conscious change to the drainage: In order to prevent uncontrolled damming, two boards were inserted into the so-called monk in January 2023, which increased the drainage height Raise 44 centimeters above the lowest level.

This roughly corresponded to the existing storage height of the beaver dam at the time.

The beaver is active again

As a result, the beaver stopped its building activity for a long time.

However, it is now active again and the new dam has to be reduced in size every few days to prevent it from accumulating even higher.

Completely removing the dam is not easily possible under nature conservation law.

The cooperative is now planning various measures, including permanently keeping the inlet on Reuterbühler Strasse clear, regular documentation of water levels and drainage behavior, and annual ditch maintenance in the fall outside of the specified closed seasons.

Ditch maintenance is carried out on the basis of nature conservation recommendations.

The process is not regularly dredged.

This would neither improve water drainage nor further lower the lake level.

From the cooperative's perspective, a corresponding obligation to do so cannot be derived from the 1921 easement.
