Home office and relaxed dress codes make the tie disappear.

Clemens Graf von Hoyos teaches millions manners and is a tie fan.

What does he say about this development?

District – The tie is in crisis.

It has disappeared from men's fashion due to home offices and a relaxed dress code.

Label expert Clemens Graf von Hoyos, on the other hand, is a convinced tie wearer.

He is the managing director of the Knigge Academy and published the book “Decency instead of Elbow” with Birte Steinkamp.

In his videos on Tiktok, some of which have several million views, numerous young people seek advice on style issues.

His seminars are also regularly fully booked.

Von Hoyos, born in 1988, is married and lives with his wife in Ottobrunn.

And how does the Count feel about the tie?

Mr. von Hoyos, does a tie give a gentleman more respectability?

I see it very differently.

Personally, I'm a big fan of the tie.

If I feel like it, I'll buy one.

But I also wear an incredible number of inherited ties, especially from my grandfather.

The tie is an accessory that can be used according to type.

Above all, it creates a good transition between the head, chin and chest areas.

Unfortunately, it is often viewed as a relic of the old economy and is considered conservative.

But the tie doesn't make me a different person, but rather someone who dresses well.

If you want to stand out - is the tie a good choice for you?

Is a fan of the tie, but doesn't want to patronize anyone.

Absolutely.

Anyone who strives for individuality wears a tie among all non-tie wearers.

The tie wearers are today's rock stars and punks.

But culture doesn't start with what you wear, but in your head.

What does that mean?

The fact that many entrepreneurs are now ditching the tie because they want to be young and hip.

In my opinion this is self-deception.

The hipper, bearded and looser, the more relaxed many people are when it comes to details in leadership issues.

In contrast, the person wearing a suit and tie may initially seem like a vain fop, but is actually often relaxed when it comes to hierarchy issues.

So for you, does a tie belong to a well-groomed outfit?

No not at all.

Everyone should find their style, but above all work on their mindset and not fall for the self-deception that just by leaving out a tie you are already cool.

They encourage people to express themselves individually through clothing, and a tie can be a good accessory.

Yes, exactly.

In today's cultural canon, many consider it to be stiff and buttoned-up, but it can also be the truth that it is an expression of aesthetic sensitivity or clothing that emphasizes type.

I'm just a fan of it.

What I don't like is this window dressing of saying that the tie has had its day, that it no longer has any justification.

The tie says nothing at all about the behavior of the wearer.

Do you experience uncertainty among your customers when it comes to dress code issues?

Yes - but when business attire is expected, this means business attire, i.e. a suit, tie and a shirt in a pastel color between blue and lilac.

And anyone who doesn't wear this stands out as ill-informed or careless.

At the Vienna Opera Ball, no one questions the fact that people wear tails.

With a dress code you also want to define the festivity or the basic atmosphere of an event.

In fact, many of my participants no longer understand this and consider it outdated.

This has been wonderful to watch over the last 15 years.

First you wore a full suit, then first you left off the tie, then the shirt.

You wore a T-shirt under your jacket until you left the jacket off too.

I've been worried the whole time about what's coming next.

Do people then go shirtless?

That would be the logical consequence.

Is the tie also a question of age?

Already.

People born before 1945 are more likely to wear a tie on formal occasions.

While men under 40 tend not to wear ties at all anymore.

Are there any other occasions where you would recommend the tie?

Yes – where you have to live up to a dress code.

Everyone should do what they want, but if you have an invitation where the host requests a tie, you should honor the request.

Otherwise, I recommend being aware that the tie forms a nice transition between the head, chin and chest area - it just looks tidy and doesn't look like a summer vacation.
