"We have defined the intervention methods for the Garisenda Tower" which will be made safe thanks to "the pylons used for the Tower of Pisa".
This was said by the mayor of Bologna, Matteo Lepore, during a press conference at Palazzo d'Accursio in Bologna, regarding the renovation work on one of the two symbolic towers of Bologna.
Once the steel pylons already used in Pisa have been installed, the Garisenda "will exit the yellow phase" and will be "made safe, entering the green phase", added Lepore.
"The objective - he said - is to do it quickly, do it well and make the Garisenda Tower safe by 2024. Thanks to the pylons already used for the Tower of Pisa we could install the two structures inside the circle of red containers that will pull the Garisenda to avoid a possible collapse. This will make it possible to secure the tower and be able to exit from that possible yellow alert zone, established by the civil protection, and bring the area back into the green zone which means safety for everyone and also a possible reopening of the Asinelli Tower to the public".
"In 2025 and 2026 there will be further consolidation and restoration work, which still needs to be planned", explains Lepore who estimates "about 6 months" as the time needed to adapt the structures used for the Tower of Pisa to the reality of Bologna.
The red containers, positioned around the Two Towers, will also remain to ensure their safety.
"The structures that saved the Tower of Pisa will also help us save the Tower of Bologna", concludes Lepore, underlining how the "19 million euros we have already collected" will be sufficient to complete the works and which "will be used for these interventions and for many other things."
