After the Amazon forest with chef Raoni on Tuesday, change of scenery on Wednesday.
It was on a naval base near Rio that Emmanuel Macron, on the second day of his state visit to Brazil, met Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, for the launching of a diesel-electric submarine designed by the French shipyard Naval Group, as part of a strategic partnership between Paris and Brasilia.
The “Tonelero”, the third submersible in this program launched in 2008 with plans for four, was baptized in champagne by its godmother, Lula’s wife.
“We have never shared our know-how as much as with Brazil, and we are proud of it,” said the president.
But his host expects more from his “comrade Macron”.
Much more.
In question ?
A fifth submarine, as part of this agreement, will be… nuclear powered.
In accordance with international atomic non-proliferation treaties, France intends to leave the entire construction of the nuclear boiler room (reactor) to the Brazilians.
However, Lula would like to benefit from French know-how in this area, through transfers of nuclear technology.
“Not to wage war, but to ensure peace,” he pleads.
Tell the French when you return to Paris.
