The city of Schongau is planning several steps to make paths safer for cyclists and pedestrians in and around Schongau.

The path between the vocational school and the Gnettner area is tackled.

And a crossing aid is being built on Altenstadter Straße.

Schongau - As part of the renovation work currently underway on Wilhelm-Köhler-Straße, the path between the vocational school and the Gnettner area is also to be repaired and re-illuminated.

The details of these plans were discussed in the recent Building and Environment Committee.

The piece is part of the cycle path concept and is intended to further close the gap between Europaplatz and Altenstadter Straße.

A bicycle street is being coordinated for a section, as Martin Blockhaus from the building authority explained.

No separation of pedestrian and cycle paths on Wilhelm-Köhler-Straße

However, there will initially be no network relocation with separation of pedestrian and cycle paths.

Rather, the shared path along the Faulen Graben will be renewed.

Blockhaus included a number of photos in his presentation for the members of the committee, some of which showed very dilapidated paths.

“There’s nothing left to save,” says Blockhaus.

But it will hardly be possible to achieve the desired width of 2.70 meters, says Blockhaus.

The administration is proposing a water-bound ceiling at 2.50 meters.

Costs: 21,200 euros plus disposal of the old asphalt.

Alternatively, a path with an eight centimeter thick asphalt surface was calculated, but this would be around twice as expensive.

“Moving light” on the footpath is intended to ensure safety

For the path lighting, the administration suggested the variant with a “moving light”, a motion light so to speak, with which they had had good experience elsewhere.

This street lighting costs around 25,200 euros, which is a little more than a simple night-time dimming system.

Thanks to LED lights, permanent savings between these lighting variants would be in the cent range, according to Florian Jocher (CSU).

“The issue is more about insect protection and light pollution,” says city architect Sebastian Dietrich.

1,815 cyclists within 15 days or 121 cyclists per 24 hours would use the path.

“That is a relatively high value,” said Blockhaus, commenting on the available figures, especially since the evaluation was carried out in autumn and higher values can be expected during the cycling season.

The evaluation of city cycling also showed that the connection at Faulen Graben is a well-used and busy route.

“It’s about time,” says a city councilor happily

“It’s about time,” said Bettina Buresch.

The Green city councilor suggested that access to the cycle path be clearly indicated at the vocational school parking lot.

“This is often overlooked and the entrance is parked.”

This should be discussed again with the district as the owner of the vocational school area, and there will also be citizen information after the Easter holidays, said Blockhaus.

“Cargo bikes will certainly increase, then we will be at risk in oncoming traffic,” feared Ilona Böse (SPD).

At their suggestion, you don't necessarily want to stick with the width of 2.50 meters, even if there is another way.

“We’ll make sure we get the most out of it,” promised Blockhaus.

The renovation of Altenstadter Straße will begin on April 22nd

The city wants to use the joint construction site on Altenstadter Straße with the Weilheim building authority, which starts on April 22nd, to ensure more safety on Schongau soil from the junction with Franz-Josef-Strauß-Straße with a barrier-free crossing aid.

In the future, the connection to the future “Südliches Eichenfeld” development area is also being considered.

Various variants were discussed at the traffic show with representatives from the police, district office, Weilheim building authority and city, explained Blockhaus.

There too, the numbers justified action.

The city cycling app recorded 2,181 trips from 281 people over a 20-day period in May 2023.

The city of Schongau is using the construction site to build a crossing aid at the same time

Around 140,000 euros were allocated to the budget for the crossing aid on Altenstadter Straße near house number 45.

“I think that’s incredibly good – both from the perspective of the driver and the pedestrian,” praised Kornelia Funke (CSU).

Buresch asked what happened to her suggestion to add a bicycle lane on the road downhill.

“Everyone agreed that road users decide for themselves where they want to drive,” said Dietrich.

At Hollberg it is possible to use a shared footpath and cycle path on one side.

“The protective strip is a false sense of security,” said Dietrich.

This is how you make a compromise and don't force anyone onto the street.
