Six opposition leaders to the Nicolás Maduro regime remain as
refugees in the Argentine embassy in Caracas
, in the midst of the political persecution carried out in Venezuela and ahead of the July 28 elections. They are all from the environment of the presidential candidate María Corina Machado, recently banned, and whose collaborators are persecuted by the Chavista prosecutor's office, with the excuse of an accusation for destabilizing attempts.
After the Argentine diplomatic headquarters opened the doors to these leaders for their shelter in the face of arrest warrants, the Government of Javier Milei expressed its concern about the moment that that country is going through and called for the security and well-being of both the Venezuelan people and of the Foreign Ministry staff. There is so much concern that gendarmes were sent to protect the embassy.
Along these lines, Argentina urged Maduro to
"call transparent and free elections"
and end the political persecution of opposition leaders.
