Used-up pans, bottle caps, old cans: these things are far too good to throw away.

That's what the Schöngeising brass band thought about last year - and made instruments out of it.

Schöngeising – Visitors were able to experience how these sound at the so-called recycling concert at the recycling center.

The Schöngeising brass band has now been awarded the Heinz Wohlmuth Prize for this project.

With this award, the Music Association of Upper and Lower Bavaria annually honors special concerts and projects to attract young talent to the member bands.

As initiators of the recycling concert, Claudia and Wilhelm Hörger accepted the award at the Music Association's delegate meeting.

Children and parents make instruments

The youth work is a matter close to the heart of the passionate musicians and long-standing supporters of the club.

At a workshop, children and their parents used a lot of creativity to make instruments from recyclable materials.

Drums were made from old plastic cans, a kind of glockenspiel made from discarded pans and pots, a horn made from a plastic hose and an old funnel and much more.

The concert at the Great Recycling Center took place as part of the “Music in special places” series, which were spread across the three communities of the Grafrath administrative community.

The youth brass band and youth ensemble were also there.

The concert should appeal to young people

The aim of the project was not only to create awareness that recyclable materials can still be useful and that they can be used, for example, to create sound bodies and rhythm instruments.

The Schöngeising brass band also wanted to attract new members and address new target groups.

Listeners who came to the recycling center to dispose of waste were also able to see for themselves how varied and creative brass music can be - contrary to all the classic clichés.

After the performance, some of the recyclable instruments were dismantled into their individual parts and recycled.

Others “survived” – and were brought to the awards ceremony.

That was the report about the concert.
