Roland Kaiser celebrated his final breakthrough with “Santa Maria”.
But there is a strange story behind the creation of the hit.
Berlin – Roland Kaiser (71) is one of the most successful pop artists in Germany.
On February 24th, the musician celebrated his 50th stage anniversary as part of the ZDF show “Giovanni Zarrella presents: 50 years of Roland Kaiser”.
When the 71-year-old looks back on his music career today, he can proudly say that he has achieved a lot - but the beginnings didn't always go the way the young artist had imagined at the time.
“It can’t be a hit”: Roland Kaiser on the origins of “Santa Maria”
In the “Polaks Schlagertalk” podcast, Roland Kaiser talks to comedian and host Oliver Polak (47), among other things, about his life in show business.
Kaiser's first steps as an artist are also examined in more detail in the conversation.
In the course of this, the musician reveals how his hit “Santa Maria” actually came about.

“If you think about what we did with 'Santa Maria' - that was an impudence,” said the 71-year-old in Polak's hit podcast.
Roland Kaiser's actual lyrics to the song were originally about Columbus and his ship “Santa Maria”.
The young singer also presented it to the producer Thomas - but the musician did not receive the feedback he had expected.
“We have to do it all over again.
“It can’t be a hit,” the producer is said to have said to the pop singer.
“You’re singing this fun now”: Roland Kaiser’s second version is convincing
Thomas demanded a new text from Roland Kaiser.
“I need something with the beach, love, sand and somehow...does something.” The musician admitted that he wasn't exactly thrilled about the response.
Over a glass of red wine, he sat down again with songwriter Norbert and they began to “exaggerate in every corner” – the result was a “caricature” of the original song.

Roland Kaiser then presented the new version to the producer, but immediately made it clear to him that it was just for fun.
“You're singing this fun now,” Thomas is said to have replied to the pop star - since then the pop star has been performing “Santa Maria” on all show stages.
But not all song ideas come from the artist himself. Roland Kaiser owes another big hit to his wife.
