Head of state for the duration of three signatures: Federal Council President Schwesig represents Federal President Steinmeier and signs three laws.
Two of them had been fought over for a long time.
Berlin/Schwerin - Federal Council President Manuela Schwesig (SPD) signed three federal laws on Wednesday, ensuring that they can come into force.
She represented Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who is on Easter vacation.
The Prime Minister of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania signed the Cannabis Act and the Growth Opportunities Act, which were particularly controversial, as well as the second Budget Financing Act 2024.
“The order for publication in the Federal Law Gazette has been given,” said the Federal President’s Office.
The laws were examined as usual - “and there are no constitutional concerns preventing them from being issued”.
When it came to the cannabis law, the CDU/CSU parliamentary group expressed the hope that the Federal President would not sign the law and thus stop it.
Schwesig decided not to travel to Berlin for the official ceremony and to sit at Steinmeier's desk in Bellevue Palace.
She had the laws to be signed brought to Schwerin.
