Tensions with the council: Criticism of the corporation on the management of the news division during the war

Criticism of the corporation council and the organization's management on the functioning of the news system under the management of Baruch Shai: Recently, the corporation council held two meetings on the conduct of the organization during the war, and in both of them criticism was made of the division's achievements and its viewing figures - this is how Wala learned!

Barangay.

Brief background:

This year's Kaan 11 edition became a mystery, when despite its neutral and state image, it failed to leverage the mass of new viewers who came to the screen "thanks" to the war.

Although the return to normalcy in recent weeks, along with a relative increase recorded nevertheless in the news division, made it possible for 11 to end the year with an increase of almost a fifth of its strength - from 4.4% in 2022 to 5.1% in 2023 - but the corporation's management is aware of the fact that the expectation was in the shadow of a national event One time like the war, more viewers will come to the public broadcasting edition.

This was especially noticeable in the first months of the war, when there was a huge increase in television viewing, which almost only Keshet 12 benefited from. At the same time, Channel 14 became the second most watched channel in Israel in all the channels and all the days.

Even News 13, which since then managed to deteriorate many times to the bottom of the daily viewership chart, went up in those weeks.

In fact, only the corporation, which actually showed a nice increase in viewership until the war, was held back.

One of the assessments in real time was that the stagnation stems from the nature of the continuous broadcasts without commercials which significantly reduced the differentiation of Kaan 11 in front of the competitors.

However, within this evaluation also permeated the understanding at the top of the corporation that the audience was looking for a recognized "television authority" - and in the hands of the corporation, there are almost none.

According to sources in the council, the blame for this lies with Shay, who instead of "bringing in talents", formed a hive of young and unknown reporters.

The corporation has also been criticized in recent months due to a number of journalistic failures that have occurred in the brigade since the beginning of the war, including the article with the survivors of the party in Nova, which was taken off the air for fear of its veracity.

In addition, the incident of the subtitles on the news screen that read "Kusaomo all of you" was also mentioned.

However, the corporation makes it clear that there is no intention to end Shay's position at this stage, he still has about a year left until the end of his term.

Shai was appointed director of the Broadcasting Corporation's news system at the beginning of 2017, after the search committee of the news division, headed by the corporation's former CEO Eldad Koblenz, selected him for the position. According to the Public Broadcasting Corporation Law, a tender for the position should be held once every four years. Shai's appointment He was approved by the corporation's board at the end of February 2017 and his term was supposed to expire in March 2020, but then the corporation operated without a board that oversees its activities, due to political delays that were related to the frequent election rounds. After the council's staffing procedure was completed - Shay was given the vote for another 4 years. According to the law, the length of the term of office of a news CEO in a corporation cannot exceed two terms, and there is still about a year to go before he ends his position one way or another.

Before working at the Broadcasting Corporation, Shay served as the editor-in-chief of the Esher News Edition (now 13), and before that he served as the editor of the "Magazine" program with Osherat Kotler.

There he worked under the current CEO of the corporation, Golan Yokhpaz, who was then CEO of the channel's news company.

In the past, Shai held editorial positions in Ma'ariv and Haretz newspapers.

At the beginning of 2015, he was appointed the head of Walla's news system and the deputy editor-in-chief.

Gil Omer, chairman of the corporation's board:

"The news division of the Public Broadcasting Corporation recorded and continues to record (on television, radio and digital) notable journalistic achievements, both during the war and in general.

The division is greatly appreciated by the public and the corporation is perceived by the Israeli public as the most reliable media outlet in Israel. These achievements would not have been possible without the work of top-class news people. I have great respect for Baruch Shai, for his professionalism and the journalistic integrity he exhibits."

Golan Yokhpaz, CEO here:

"I have great respect for the news division, its people and its head, Baruch Shai, in routine and certainly in the ongoing war.

The members of the brigade, who have not stopped working in the last six months, recorded considerable journalistic achievements during the war and well before it.

The managers, journalists and people of the division stand behind the news broadcast, which is repeatedly awarded the title of the most reliable in Israel in external polls, and in the past year the division, led by Baruch Shai, also achieved the highest viewing figures in the corporation's history

.

"

We in the news division act fearlessly and impartially, as has been proven recently in the series of first exposures and publications.

The employees of the brigade who work day and night, risking their lives, during war, and in difficult conditions, deserve praise.

We are happy that the dedicated and professional work in the division on all its branches - radio, digital television, in Hebrew and Arabic - is reflected in the polls as being considered the most reliable news body in Israel and the continuous increase in the rating, including victories over the competitors.

Any attempt to interfere with the independence of our journalistic judgment and administrative decisions is against the law and the basic values of the free media.

We will not give in to political and other pressures, we will continue to stand guard in order to preserve the public's trust in us, and to faithfully serve the citizens."
