Highlights: The Armorique regional natural park (PNRA), in Finistère, has finally been labeled a global geopark. It is one of around 140 UNESCO-certified geoparks in the world. The distinction rewards the quality and good management of the natural and geological heritage of a given sector. To celebrate the Armorique geopark, come to Crozon on May 18 and 19, for the Center of the Earth Festival. It will kick off a program with events accessible to everyone throughout the country.

The news has officially broken: the Armorique regional natural park (PNRA), in Finistère, has finally been labeled a global geopark

The file has been under study since 2017, it is now official: the Armorique regional natural park (PNRA), one of the oldest natural parks in France, whose geological resources, particularly on the coast, are remarkable , becomes one of around 140 UNESCO-certified geoparks in the world.

A beautiful recognition for the kersantite vein at the Pointe du Château in Logonna-Daoulas, the Pierre du Roz, the Pointe de Dinan and the cliffs overlooking Pen Hat beach in Camaret-sur-Mer, the granite chaos of Huelgoat, the Rosnoën belvedere, the Mougau peat bog in Commana, or the fossil coral reef bank at the Pointe de l'Armorique in Plougastel-Daoulas...

And a great victory for the park, the municipalities and the institutions which worked hand in hand to enable this distinction “which rewards the quality and good management of the natural and geological heritage of a given sector and which will be re-evaluated every four years”, as explained by Jérémie Bourdoulous, director of natural heritage at the PNRA.

Coming soon, the Center of the Earth Festival

This “Armorique geopark” now aims to promote “responsible development of the territory: in other words, to promote a form of tourism that respects the environment through visitor awareness”: installation of interpretation panels, activities for all audiences, revised scenographies for the three houses of the geopark – the Domaine de Menez Meur (Hanvec), the House of Minerals (Crozon), and the Strawberry and Heritage Museum (Plougastel-Daoulas).

The built heritage, both civil and religious - such as the parish enclosures, already a UNESCO World Heritage Site - is part of this recognition.

The Armorique regional natural park already benefited from an international UNESCO label: the Iroise Islands and Sea biosphere reserve, which brings together the islands of Ouessant, Molène and Sein.

It is the only one in the Great West of France.

To celebrate the Armorique geopark, come to Crozon on May 18 and 19, for the Center of the Earth Festival.

It will kick off a program with events accessible to everyone throughout the country in spring and summer.
