Easter will be celebrated differently by the Norwegian royal family this year. Despite progress in his health, special safety precautions apply to King Harald.
Oslo – In mid-March, King Harald V (87) had to have a permanent pacemaker inserted. The procedure became necessary after Norway's monarch contracted a serious infection during a trip to Malaysia. “When a person his age gets an infection, it is always a serious matter,” Harald’s personal physician Bjørn Bendz warned after the operation.
Easter is not at the mountain hut: King Harald has to stay near the hospital
Now, however, there is positive news from the Norwegian royal family. In a new photo that the royal family shared on
on the occasion of the upcoming Easter , King Harald appears in a good mood with his loved ones. The Regent took a seat next to Queen Sonja (86), behind the royal couple are Prince Sverre Magnus (18), Princess Ingrid Alexandra (20), Crown Princess Mette-Marit (50) and Crown Prince Haakon (50).
Our new WhatsApp channel also offers more news from the world of entertainment.
“The royal family wishes everyone a really nice Easter. The royal couple and the crown prince family gathered in the royal palace on Bygdø at the beginning of Easter week,” reads the Easter message. Unlike in previous years, King Harald and Queen Sonja will spend the Easter days entirely on Bygdø, according to

- for security reasons. The royal estate is only a 15-minute drive from Rikshospitalet in Oslo, where Harald was operated on.
“This year they are breaking with tradition”: Mette-Marit and Haakon are not spending the whole Easter week with Harald and Sonja
The Norwegian royal family normally uses their Prinsehytta mountain hut in Sikkilsdalen over Easter, but this tradition is now being broken in order not to expose King Harald to unnecessary danger. Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit will first celebrate Easter with their children in Bygdø before spending the rest of Easter week at their home in Uvdal, around three hours' drive from Oslo.

“This year they are breaking tradition and are at the royal estate on Bygdøy. It is probably a more suitable place for the king now that he is sick,” royal expert Caroline Vagle explains to
Se og Hør
. "The Crown Prince's family will be with the royal couple in the first half of Easter, which will certainly be appreciated by both young and old." In April, Crown Prince Haakon is planning a big trip abroad - without his Mette-Marit.
