An audio recording shows how Taliban leader Hibatullah Achundsada announced that he would resolutely enforce the Islamic criminal justice system. This also includes the public stoning of women for adultery, said the Afghan head of state, according to

. According to Taliban officials, the recording comes from the last speech by the head of the fundamentalist Taliban government.

In his speech he also addressed Western critics. “You can call it a violation of women’s rights if we publicly stone or whip them for adultery because they contradict your democratic principles,” Akhundsada said, according to

. He claimed to “strive for the freedom of all humanity”. While he represented Allah, as the Taliban leader said, he accused the Western powers of representing “Satan.”
The death penalty by stoning has been used in recent years
in countries such as Iran, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Somalia and Yemen, according to
the International Society for Human Rights
. Afghanistan is also on the list of countries.
Women under Taliban rule: “Crimes against humanity”
The Islamist terrorist group is known for its cruel punishments and harsh application of Sharia law. When the Taliban ruled Afghanistan in the 1990s, they regularly carried out public executions and floggings. In February 2024, the media reported on the fourth known public execution of people by the Taliban since they came to power in 2021. Two men are said to have been executed with 15 shots in front of several thousand people.
The situation of women in the country in particular has been repeatedly criticized by the international community. In 2023, the human rights organization Human Rights Watch (HRW) called the treatment of women and girls by the Taliban a “crime against humanity”. This included, among other things, the ban on all types of employment, arbitrary arrests and violations of the right to freedom. HRW called for the Taliban's crimes to be prosecuted.
Taliban want to continue to oppose democratic values and human rights
Western countries led by the US withdrew from the country in 2021 after 20 years of involvement in the Afghan war as the Taliban was on the rise. Since then, the humanitarian situation in the country has deteriorated drastically. HRW called the situation in Afghanistan in 2023 one of the “worst humanitarian crises” in the world.

Under the Taliban, girls in Afghanistan are not allowed to attend school from the sixth grade onwards and adult women are only allowed to undertake longer journeys when accompanied by a male relative. According to the recordings of their boss, the Taliban want to stick to this.
The Taliban's religious scholars want to continue to stubbornly oppose the democratic values of the West, Achundsada said in his speech, according to

, criticizing Western human rights and women's freedom. The United Nations and the EU have repeatedly called on the Taliban to respect the human rights of the Afghan population and to lift sanctions against women - so far without success.
