The highest residential building in Bavaria stands on the outskirts of Erlangen. Almost 400 apartments are stacked on top of each other here - including luxury properties.

Erlangen – Horror for some, a dream for others: The “Lange Johann” in Erlangen divides opinion. Bavaria's record-breaking residential building, the tallest of its kind in the Free State, is 80 meters high and has a total of 384 apartments. And if you think there are only small social housing units here, you are very much mistaken.

The “Lange Johann” in Erlangen – the largest residential building in Bavaria

The largest residential building in Bavaria, called the “Lange Johann”, is located on St. Johann Street in the Alterlangen district of Erlangen. The residential building has 27 floors, with 384 apartments on its 24,000 square meters of usable space. According to BR, these are by no means just small one-room apartments. There are those too – but there are also two- and three-room apartments in “Langen Johann”.

However, there is a structural separation between the types of housing. The cheap one-room apartments are in the east tower, the more expensive two and three-room apartments are in the west tower, writes the BR. And at the top? There is space for luxurious penthouse apartments that boast outstanding views from the private roof terrace.

The “Lange Johann” in Erlangen – 70s ambience and an exciting story

The “Lange Johann” was planned in the 1960s and met with great interest. When the high-rise was finished in 1973, the zeitgeist had changed - people wanted to move to the suburbs of Erlangen, single-family homes instead of high-rise buildings were popular, reports BR. Difficult times for “Langer Johann” – but he got through them. Today, high-rise building enthusiasts and singles who can only afford one-room apartments live here.

The “Lange Johann” still conveys the charm of its origins today. According to the BR report, numerous cameras around the building ensure the safety of residents. There are ashtrays next to the orange elevator doors in the entrance area - even though smoking has long been banned there. Brown tiles complete the 1960s ambience.

Whether high-rise buildings soon experience a boom again or not, “Lange Johann” will remain; it has already been through tougher times. And no one is likely to challenge his record any time soon - at least there is currently no mega-high-rise project in the Free State. Nationwide, the “Langen Johann” is missing a lot of things to reach first place: The “Grand Tower” in Frankfurt, completed in 2020, is Germany’s tallest residential building at 180 meters.
